Marvel Is Killing Off One of Its Most Powerful Entities

[ad_1]

Marvel’s Reckoning War already begins killing the most important Abstract Entity there is to the survival of the entire Marvel Universe.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1 by Dan Slott, Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Fonteriz, Carlos Magno, Guru-eFX and VC’s Joe Caramagna has just unleashed a threat so massive that it is tearing the living embodiment of the Marvel Universe apart.

The Earth has fallen under attack, the moon has been destroyed and the secrets of the malevolent Reckoning have finally been revealed. Heroes all across the universe have leaped into action in whatever ways they can, while the Silver Surfer has been thrust into the realm of the Abstract Entities which embody universal constants such as reality. There the Silver Surfer witnesses Eternity, the living manifestation of the Marvel Universe itself, suffering through what is poised to be a long and painful demise.

The Abstract Entity embodying all possibilities known as the Queen of Nevers explains that the war being waged by the Reckoning has reached every corner of the universe. Because of this, Eternity himself was effectively poisoned by the mass conflicts. As a hero who has seen firsthand the birth of the current reality, the Silver Surfer was called on by the Queen of Nevers to seek out some unspoken means of saving Eternity. The Silver Surfer is quick to take his leave, hoping that whatever mysterious cure there is for Eternity’s condition won’t be worse than what is currently killing him. Considering the death of Eternity would also mean the end of the Marvel Universe as it stands, the Silver Surfer’s concerns are as ominous as the threat at hand.

Reckoning War has been referred to as a story 15 years in the making and has teased that it will have serious repercussions for every aspect of the Marvel Universe. This is clearly the case already and will continue in the pages of Fantastic Four #40 on Feb. 16.

First introduced in Steve Ditko and Stan Lee’s “If Eternity Should Fail!” from the pages of 1965’s Strange Tales #138, Eternity has been the center of numerous storylines over the years. In the most recent of these major events to feature Eternity, the interdimensional Beyonders destroyed the Abstract Entity in 2015’s New Avengers #30 by Jonathan Hickman and Dalibor Talajic. This kicked off the beginnings of 2015’s Secret Wars, which saw the Multiverse refashioned into Doctor Doom’s Battleworld. The Multiverse and Eternity have recovered since then, though they aren’t any less susceptible to Marvel’s next grave threat because of it.

Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1 is on sale now from Marvel Comics. The story continues in the pages of Dan Slott and Rachael Stott’s Fantastic Four #40, on sale Feb. 16.
