Following his breakout live-action debut in James Gunn’s 2021 DCEU hit The Suicide Squad, John Cena reprised the character of Peacemaker for the titular series on HBO Max. While some were surprised by the announcement given the character’s obscure place in the comics, fans of Doom Patrol know that the obscure can find success on television.
Given the developing success of the Peacemaker series, fans are already beginning to discuss which DC characters might be next to be adapted to the small screen. We’ve selected a few characters from the comics and other DCEU movies that also deserve their own series alongside HBO Max’s Peacemaker.
10 Plastic Man Would Fit Well In The Comedic Style Of James Gunn’s Peacemaker
Eel O’Brian was a small-time criminal who gained incredibly elastic skin and shape-changing abilities after he was exposed to an experimental chemical to become Plastic Man. The heroic Justice League member has a unique personality and an unparalleled ability to form his body into nearly anything he can imagine.
He often uses this ability to assist in his frequent jokes and attempts at slapstick comedy, which could play well in the world created by James Gunn’s Peacemaker. Plastic Man was transformed back in the 1940s which also opens up a number of story opportunities for a series about the character.
9 Martian Manhunter Is An Alien Shape-Shifter Who Becomes A Human Detective
While there have now been a couple of live-action versions of Martian Manhunter that have appeared on The CW’s Supergirl and HBO Max’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League, there is still room to explore the character further in a series.
Following the Martian Manhunter’s transportation to Earth, he created a civilian identity called John Jones that allowed him to work as a detective in order to help his adopted planet. It’s a perfect setup for a sci-fi police procedural set in the DC universe that could give the Martian Manhunter the spotlight in an exciting new way.
8 Booster Gold Is A Time-Traveling Super Hero On The Hunt For Fame & Fortune
There’s a Blue Beetle movie focusing on the Jaime Reyes version of the character that is currently in production, though some are still hoping to see a new adaptation of the other half of DC’s fan-favorite Blue & Gold partnership, Booster Gold. Michael Jon Carter was a security guard in a 25th-century museum where he stole the items he needed to become a superhero.
He traveled back in time and became Booster Gold with the hopes of gaining fame and fortune. The character experienced a fantastic amount of growth in the comics that would easily carry a series and Booster Gold’s humor in heroic situations would appeal to fans of HBO Max’s Peacemaker.
7 The Spectre Is DC’s Divine Spirit Of Vengeance And Could Blend Multiple Genres
Jim Corrigan was an NYPD detective who was killed by the criminals he was hunting down, resulting in his spirit being left to wander the Earth filled with rage and wrath. This attracted God’s divine spirit of vengeance, which bonded with Corrigan to become the powerful DC being known as The Spectre.
Corrigan was able to not only seek his own vengeance but also return to his life as a detective in order to help others while delivering out justice and vengeance for a higher power. There have been a few other hosts for the Spectre over the years, as fans saw when Oliver Queen/Green Arrow took over as the Arrowverse’s live-action Spectre.
6 Deathstroke Could Follow-Up on The Character’s Previous DCEU Appearances
DC’s master assassin is Slade Wilson, who is better known as Deathstroke the Terminator and widely regarded as one of the most dangerous threats in the DC universe. Fans have seen a couple of live-action versions of the character on the TV, though the DCEU teased a big-screen version in 2017’s Justice League that was expanded on in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Actor Joe Manganiello has expressed his interest in returning to the role of Slade Wilson, and a series on HBO Max would give fans the opportunity to see more of his version of the character that was only teased in the DCEU. There are many story avenues the series could take as well, from his family drama and the assassin life to grudges with characters like Batman or the Teen Titans.
5 Sideways Could Give The New Age Of DC Heroes Character Another Shot At Success
The CW has recently brought new DC hero Naomi to the small screen, surprising fans with something fresh while also showcasing the need for other new heroic adaptations outside of the comics. The New Age of DC Heroes introduced an entire wave of new heroes, though only a few of them actually managed to resonate with fans.
Derek James had his metagene unlocked during the Dark Nights: Metal event, which gave him the ability to open interdimensional portals, which he used to become the hero known as Sideways. He was being set up for a larger role in DC’s multiverse when his comic was canceled, though he could find new life on TV as a young hero with incredible abilities.
4 Huntress Could Follow The Character After Her Successful Debut In Birds Of Prey
2020’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) introduced a new team of heroes to the DCEU that worked with Harley Quinn to protect young Cassandra Cain from Black Mask and his gang. Black Canary and Renee Montoya joined with Helena Bertinelli/Huntress, the orphaned daughter of a crime boss who spent her life training to get revenge.
The series could not only further explore Huntress’ origins and hunt for vengeance against the criminals who murdered her family but also continue the story of the Birds of Prey while giving Mary Elizabeth Winstead another chance with the future member of the Bat-Family. Huntress’s brutality and oddball humor in BoP would translate well to a series much like Peacemaker.
3 Deadman Possesses People To Get Justice And Find Answers To His Assassination
Boston Brand was a fearless but arrogant trapeze artist and daredevil whose assassination resulted in his spirit being stuck in between life and death due to the power of Rama Kushna. Brand was returned to the world of the living as Deadman, a spirit who was capable of possessing human bodies and tasked with helping others in order to make up for his own sinful past.
A Deadman series could be the next adaptation that helps finally bring the Justice League Dark to live-action by following it up with connected solo adaptations of characters like Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon to join other DC characters like Swamp Thing or John Constantine that have already been established on TV.
2 Static’s Debut In Live-Action May Work Better As A Series Instead Of A Movie
DC’s Milestone Universe has a rich selection of characters that could all be explored outside of the comics, though one of the most popular heroes who has received the most attention is Static. The young hero starred in the Static Shock animated series from the 2000s, and there are plans for a live-action movie from producer Michael B. Jordan.
While seeing the character on the big screen is still an exciting prospect, a series would be able to better develop the character and potentially set up other characters from the Milestone universe to set up a brand new shared universe.
1 Lobo Would Add A Whole New Galactic Bounty Hunting Element To The DCEU
While the Justice League fought off an alien invasion in the DCEU and other galactic elements like the Green Lantern Corps were teased, there hasn’t been much exploration of the actual DC universe on the big or small screens. An adaptation of the alien bounty hunter Lobo would give fans an exciting new look into another side of the DCEU.
Lobo is the Last Czarnian who has Superman-level strength and endurance along with an advanced healing factor that allows him to keep dishing out even more than he can take. A series that followed Lobo around on his bounty hunting quests across the galaxy would entice viewers from Peacemaker and a number of other different genres.
