The Book of Boba Fett has that Fast & Furious feel to it in its debut season, but it is better than Vin Diesel’s high-octane franchise in one big way.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett, “Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian,” now streaming on Disney+.
One of the most intriguing aspects about The Book of Boba Fett is how much it has that Fast & Furious feel to it. It appeared with the train heist Boba did with the Tuskens, as well as with the cyborg biker gangs chasing Mok Shaiz. It’s no surprise given Star Wars pivoted quite often on epic space chases, with Solo: A Star Wars Story then modernizing these sequences in a way that would have made Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto proud. Interestingly, in the latest episode of Boba Fett, the series took the slow-burn approach with guest star, Din Djarin, on Tatooine embarking on a garage mission, yet in the process, the show actually proved it was better than Fast & Furious due to what transpired after.
Recent Fast & Furious movies have lost so much of the original essence, like the stock cars, engine work and labor intensive days. The first three movies especially waded into the science and mechanics on a relatable ground level, but now, the films are more about advanced tech, weaponry and high-level engineering. So much so, these movies feel more like a sci-fi film with cars going on wild adventures.
Din’s experience, however, is a grimy one in the garage, just like how it was when Dom hired Brian to work with him and Jesse. Instead, Din used Peli Motto and Jawas to scour for parts as they rebuilt a N-1 Naboo starfighter for the bounty hunter to go find Grogu.
The extended scene was a pleasant throwback for gearheads, showcasing the work that went into it, like spray-painting, rummaging for rare equipment on a budget and welding the scrap iron. It was hard work yet art, which created a better payoff than buying a readymade ship, proving Din was a genius builder.
As for what made this better, it had to do with the test drive. In Fast & Furious movies, the heroes usually test-raced against some jerks on highways, but Din took it to another level as he sped off into space. He was able to make friends with a Rodian girl, adding endearment to the session, but the real kicker came with the X-Wing cops that pulled him over from the New Republic.
They tried to suss out if he was a genuine ship-owner and if the vessel itself was legal, but Din basically hit the space NOS and sped off. He left them in his stardust, and to top it off, the cops — some of the galaxy’s best pilots — didn’t even bother to pursue. Din was too fast; plus, if they reported it, it’d be unnecessary paperwork. It ended up being a high-octane and funny scene, giving Din the ultimate muscle racer and a speeder Dom would be proud of.
To see Din with his space racer, The Book of Boba Fett airs each Wednesday on Disney+.
