New set photos from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald confirm an actor was on hand to play Ariana Dumbledore, who was not in the final cut.

Newly leaked set photos from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald confirm an actor was on hand to play Ariana Dumbledore, who was mentioned, but not actually featured in the 2018 Harry Potter spinoff film.

The photos, which can be viewed on the Harry Potter news site MuggleNet, show an unidentified actor in-costume as Ariana Dumbledore on the set of The Crimes of Grindelwald. The actor in question is seen sporting two different Victorian-esque outfits across three separate photos. The fact that Ariana was not in the final cut of The Crimes of Grindelwald has led to speculation among fans that the character will actually appear on-screen in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, perhaps in flashback sequences, though absolutely nothing is confirmed on that front at this time.

The younger sister of Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore, Ariana Dumbledore was introduced in J.K. Rowling’s 2007 novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final entry in the Harry Potter book series. Ariana was killed in 1899 at the age of 14, having been caught in the crossfire of a three-way duel between the Dumbledore brothers and Gellert Grindelwald. In the two-part film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Ariana appears in photos, portrayed by Hebe Beardsall. However, while Ariana is identified by name in 2011’s Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the film does not delve into her backstory, nor does it reveal the circumstances of her death like the book did.

The 2016 Harry Potter spinoff/prequel film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them — which is set in 1926 (several decades before Harry Potter was even born) — introduced a new concept to the franchise: Obscurials. An Obscurial is a young witch or wizard who develops a dark parasitical force known an Obscurus as a result of their magic being suppressed by physical or psychological abuse. The Crimes of Grindelwald, the 2018 sequel to Fantastic Beasts, revealed that, ostensibly, the Obscurial known as Credence Barebone was actually named Aurelius Dumbledore. This gave way to a popular fan theory, which posits that Ariana was indeed an Obscurial herself, as the symptoms of her “illness” (as described by Aberforth) seem to line up. A similar theory suggests that Ariana’s Obscurus was perhaps passed to Credence/Aurelius upon her death. That said, these theories also remain unconfirmed.

Set during the 1930s, the upcoming Fantastic Beasts threequel Secrets of Dumbledore sees Jude Law reprise his role as Albus Dumbledore from The Crimes of Grindelwald. The role was famously played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the original Harry Potter films. The Secrets of Dumbledore also marks Richard Coyle’s debut as Aberforth Dumbledore, who himself was portrayed in the Harry Potter movies by Jim McManus and Ciarán Hinds. Meanwhile, Ezra Miller reprises his role as Credence Barebone/Aurelius Dumbledore from the first two Fantastic Beasts films. It’s unclear if Ariana Dumbledore will factor into the new film in some capacity in order to complete the family reunion.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore hits theaters in the United Kingdom on Friday, April 8 and in the United States on Friday, April 15.
