DC’s Black History Month celebration includes variant covers, The Milestone Initiative and free curated titles on DC Universe Infinite.
With February officially underway, Burbank-based comic book publisher DC has detailed its plans for Black History Month 2022.
First and foremost, DC has offered more details on The Milestone Initiative, which it first announced during the 2021 edition of the DC FanDome virtual convention. Launched in association with Ally, The Milestone Initiative was created to “identify, develop and mentor aspiring comic book professionals of color.”
DC elaborates, “Applicants selected for the Milestone Talent Development Program will receive both in-person tutelage from working comic book professionals, in addition to virtual education through the prestigious Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. After study, attendees will be paired with other comic book professionals to create new, original stories within the Milestone Universe.” The initiative takes its name from Milestone Media, an independently-owned imprint of DC that introduced numerous ethnically diverse heroes to the world of comics, most notably Virgil Hawkins/Static.
Of course, DC has also partnered with artist Alexis Franklin for a series of variant covers celebrating the publisher’s Black superheroes, which will be released throughout the month of February. The first issue to feature one of Franklin’s variants, Green Lantern #11, is on sale now. Additional Black History Month variants will be released with I Am Batman #6 on Feb. 8; Nubia and the Amazons #5 and The Flash #779 on Feb. 15; and Action Comics #1040 and Aquamen #1 on Feb. 22.
Finally, the DC Universe Infinite digital subscription service will feature “a free selection curated titles” centering on DC’s Black superheroes. Readers can visit DCUniverseInfinite.com for information about starting a free trial. Meanwhile, the DC Shop is “also spotlighting fan items” based around these heroes.
Moreover, DC has provided a list of currently-available and upcoming titles that it is spotlighting as part of its Black History Month celebration:
