Spider-Man Writer Says Green Goblin Wasn’t Always No Way Home’s Main Villain

Spider-Man: No Way Home writer Chris McKenna reveals Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn/Green Goblin wasn’t always the movie’s main villain.

While the theatrical version of Spider-Man: No Way Home may have put the spotlight Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), that wasn’t always the case.

In an interview with Gold Derby, No Way Home co-writer Chris McKenna revealed that Green Goblin was just a regular villain in the original script for the film. However, as the film lost characters and evolved, McKenna and co-writer Erik Sommers decided, “Well, it has to be him. He’s the one who now is the antagonist of the movie. We have to make him the antagonist. […] He has to have been given a second chance and he’s still doing what he was doing in the first movie, but in a darker way that then, well, that now relates to Peter Parker,’ if that makes sense. “

Set after the events of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, No Way Home sees Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) enlisting the help of Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to re-hide his secret identity after he was exposed by Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). However, the spell goes awry, and a number of villain from past Spider-Man films end up entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Otto Octavius/Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and Max Dillon/Electro (Jamie Foxx). Despite the movie’s many villains, Green Goblin ends up serving as one of Spider-Man’s biggest antagonists in No Way Home.

At the box office, No Way Home has earned over $1.738 billion worldwide despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, making it one of the highest-grossing films ever. No Way Home also proved a massive hit with critics and audiences. Currently, the movie’s critical score on Rotten Tomatoes sits at 93 percent, the second-highest for any MCU film. That success has led Marvel Studios and Sony to campaign for No Way Home to get a Best Picture nomination at this year’s Academy Awards.

It is not clear at this time just when Spider-Man will next appear in the MCU. However, Disney and Sony are actively developing Spider-Man’s future in the MCU. Additionally, Holland has reportedly already signed on for a fourth Spider-Man film.

At this time, the streaming and home media releases for Spider-Man: No Way Home do not have an official release date. The film, which was directed by Jon Watts, also stars Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leed and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May.
