Tony Stark is quickly proving that his own best intentions still aren’t a good enough reason for him to keep playing the role of Marvel’s latest cosmic god.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Iron Man #16 by Christopher Cantwell, Julius Ohta, Frank D’Armata, and VC’s Joe Caramagna, available now from Marvel.
Tony Stark’s latest transformation into the god-like Cosmic Iron Man saved the universe from the threat of Korvac. Unfortunately, it’s created a whole new set of problems.
First and foremost is what Tony intends to do with his newfound powers. Regrettably, Iron Man’s initial plan, to share his incredible intellect, demonstrates the power cosmic doesn’t necessarily come with the sense common. “Gifting” his intellect to all of New York rapidly proves not to improve the lives of Big Apple denizens. Instead, it sows chaos and discomfort almost immediately. It’s yet another sign that a more powerful Iron Man is not the same as an improved one.
Iron Man Can’t Be Trusted with Marvel’s Most Powerful Weapon for a Terrifying Reason
Upon returning to Earth after defeating Korvac out amidst the cosmos, Tony’s old crew of Space Friends, as well as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, welcome him home. Those assembled heroes are quick to question what Iron Man has done and plans to do. Stark doesn’t even bother finishing the conversation before putting his plan into action. In an instant, Stark’s own super genius-level intelligence imbues every resident of New York City.
Most people affected by Cosmic Iron Man’s “gift” provide no small amount of levity in their reaction to the unexpected leap in intellect. Still, others are quick to put their newly formed ideas to work. Chief, and most immediately dangerous amongst them, is the D-list villain Big Wheel. As almost anyone could tell you, making someone smarter doesn’t necessarily make them any better.
Despite Big Wheel neither intending nor causing any actual harm in his pursuit of traffic-free roadways, one can’t ignore his wanton disregard for the endangerment of those caught in his path. This mirrors Tony’s own choices. Big Wheel was so convinced he had the solution that he didn’t consider the consequences. It’s the same as the cosmic-powered, armor-wearing man who gave him the boosted smarts to dream up that plan in the first place. Ultimately both acts may involve higher intelligence, but ego is the real catalyst.
Why Iron Man’s Most Controversial Story Was Too Dark For the MCU
Worse, Big Wheel does little to wake Iron Man up to the flaws in his reasoning. While almost anyone understands having intellect doesn’t guarantee that a person will wield it in thoughtful or helpful ways, Tony seems blissfully unaware of this reality. His inability to recognize the evident and unsettling repercussions, even almost literally run over him, call into question just how qualified he is to wield the Power Cosmic.
Even when confronted by Patsy Walker, aka Hellcat, with these harsh truths and the fact that Big Wheel nearly killed her, all Tony has to say is, “You’re welcome.” The callous cluelessness of this reply suggests he may not even be capable of introspection at this time. One still hopes Iron Man will see how careless he’s being with tremendous power. The alternative is Tony Stark may already be on his way to becoming a victim of his incredible hubris. Then, the only question will be, “how many more people need to suffer before that day comes?”
