Spider-Man: No Way Home star Willem Dafoe pokes fun at the popular Joker fan-casting during his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live.
Spider-Man: No Way Home star Willem Dafoe, who reprised his famous role as the Green Goblin from Sam Raimi’s trilogy, recently poked fun at the popular fan-casting involving him and DC’s iconic comic book supervillain, the Joker.
During Dafoe’s opening monologue for Saturday Night Live, the actor touched on his expressive face and how it might have led to fans calling for him to play the Clown Prince of Crime. “Always nice to hear that you’ve got the vibe of a sociopath,” the actor joked.
Dafoe has proven to be a popular candidate for the next Joker actor among enthusiastic fans, many of which cite his expressiveness, laugh and more when playing villains such as the Green Goblin. The actor has touched on the topic in the past, recently revealing that it’s something he has seriously considered, especially after Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Todd Phillips’ Joker.
The No Way Home star explained that he would want to play a version of the villain, “There is something interesting about, like, if there was a Joker imposter… So it would be possible to have not dueling Jokers but someone that says to be the Joker that isn’t the Joker. And that kind of opens up the possibility of an interesting story, particularly if you had Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, and then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did.” The actor clarified that he hasn’t approached anyone about playing the Joker in any official capacity.
While there have been no official announcements concerning a Joker sequel, it has been reported that Phillips has signed on for another film focused on the classic Batman villain. This in turn follows several reports suggesting that a sequel has been in development for some time. Star Joaquin Phoenix, however, previously cast doubt over these reports, suggesting that he was unaware of any such project.
Phoenix previously stated, “I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to —you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”
While a Joker adaptation starring Dafoe is nowhere on the horizon, the actor can be seen as the maniacal Green Goblin in Marvel Studios and Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, currently playing in theaters.
