Eternals introduces the might of the Celestials, but even their combined strength may not be enough to stop the hunger of Galactus.
The Celestials in Eternals are potentially the most powerful beings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From the moment they first appear on screen, their towering presence lets audiences know there is next to no hope in defying or even fighting them. That said, Sersi and her band of Eternals were able to stop the birth of a Celestial and kill it in the process. Because the unthinkable has happened, her actions could pave the way for a being more deadly than any Celestial: Galactus.
With the Fantastic Four coming to the MCU, speculation of if, or when, the Devourer of Worlds will appear has been abundant. For now, the truth is still unknown, but Eternals may offer potential clues to his arrival. The first being why he would appear and want to consume the planet for sustenance. It’s been established that the flow of life in the galaxy is due largely to the actions of Celestials. For eons, these beings have created galaxies, planets and the life that appears on them. However, these planets also serve as sustenance for a new Celestial to be born. While the planet would die, countless more could be born, continuing the cycle.
This action allows for the flow of cosmic energy and the energy used to grow a Celestial to remain uninterrupted. However, when the Eternals killed Tiamut on Earth, it caused a disruption in that flow. Now, billions of potential planets will not be created, and a supply chain of sustenance and the continuation of the Celestial species has been dealt a significant blow. This could also awaken an ancient Celestial, Galactus, who was kept at bay with the flow of energy coming from the creation of worlds.
Now, hungry and needing the appropriate amount of energy, he roams the galaxy, finding a herald who will gather new worlds for him to consume, but because the current group of Celestials has been in command for so long, his presence also disrupts their rule, making him a friend to none and an enemy to nearly every living being in the galaxy. Furthermore, by introducing him, any Celestial that has been introduced in the MCU before would also be unable to contend with him due to his ancient power.
By making Galactus an even older Celestial than what appeared in Eternals, he could also have access to older technologies, in the same vein of creator Jack Kirby’s designs, allowing him to siphon the Earth’s resources for himself. As a result, he becomes something visually more classic than the current Celestials, while also being stronger because of the ancient cosmic power that fuels him.
Galactus’ presence in a universe that is scratching the surface of powerful foes, including Kang and Gargantos, means that he will have to be strong enough to make them look weaker by comparison. Turning the villain into an ancient Celestial is a great way to bring experience and intimidation to a character never seen before in the MCU. It also brings a mythic quality to him as he is powerful and someone that even other Celestials approach with caution.
