Obito was Kakashi’s former comrade and one of the primary antagonists in Naruto. Over the years, he has applied his tremendous power both to the benefit and detriment of Konoha. Regardless of affiliation, the man’s actions have resonated well after his death.
Like all well-written characters, Obito is defined through his strengths and weaknesses. The nuances of Obito’s personality and skillset are worth evaluating and appreciating, but some fans question whether he deserved the redemption he received at the end of Shippuden.
10 Weakness: Obito’s Loyalty Is Extremely Fickle
Obito is one of the most inconsistent characters in the entire series, constantly switching sides and betraying his comrades. This was first seen after his presumed death, where Madara retrained him to become a harbinger of his will.
Their plan involved Obito joining and double-crossing the Akatsuki. Obito would later backstab Madara when realigning with the Allied Shinobi Forces, making him have turned against literally every side of the conflict at various points in his life. The only person less trustworthy than Obito is Sasuke.
9 Strength: Obito Has Fantastic Reflexes
Obito has some of the best reflexes out of all of Naruto‘s impressive ninja warriors. He was able to keep up with Minato, a man who was regarded as the fastest shinobi alive, and only slipped up due to a cheap trick.
He also avoided the combined attacks of Kakashi, Naruto, Sakura, and Kiba by tactically employing his Kamui. He did it with such fluency and finesse that he could simply sit back and mock them without retaliating. In the end, Kakashi realized that the best way to defeat him was by fighting in his own dimension.
8 Weakness: Obito’s Durability Leaves Much To Be Desired
Despite his fantastic reflexes, Obito’s actual durability leaves much to be desired. He was thoroughly bludgeoned by Kakashi with a combination of basic ninjutsu and taijutsu attacks. This was again demonstrated when he was nearly taken out of the fight after being hit by a single one of Minato’s Rasengan.
Perhaps the most classic example of Obito’s low durability is when he was crushed by a boulder and lost half his torso. Although Obito is substantially more resilient in his Ten-Tails Jinchuriki state, it can’t be used as a basis for his power, considering how briefly he was transformed.
7 Strength: Obito Constantly Surrounds Himself With Powerful Allies
Despite being completely unreliable, Obito is proficient at surrounding himself with strong allies. This was first seen in childhood, where he made friends with Kakashi, Minato, and even Madara Uchiha.
Joining the Akatsuki was an extremely intelligent decision, as it allowed him to stay updated on current events while pursuing Nagato’s Rinnegan. Moreover, since the organization was already reeling by the time he was actually sent on a mission, they had less incentive to question his motives or identity.
6 Weakness: Obito’s Idealism Corrupts His Judgment
Obito’s idealism has reliably corrupted his judgment. Although the concept of putting friends before the mission was a sound one, he believed it so fully that he refused to consider the context behind Kakashi killing Rin.
Instead of attempting to rejoin Konoha or pursue the truth, he ended up thinking the world was so broken that only the Infinite Tsukuyomi could fix it. This notion was extremely destructive and led to the deaths of countless innocent shinobi.
5 Strength: Obito Is Courageous In Any Endeavor
When Obito is committed to a task, he is incredibly courageous and self-sacrificing. This was first proven when offering his Sharingan to Kakashi after being crushed by a boulder. Once he was redeemed, Obito also willingly took a bone spike on Team Seven’s behalf.
As a result, the heroes were able to continue the fight and banish Kaguya permanently. As numerous as Obito’s sins may have been, he was ultimately responsible for saving the world. Although Obito prefers to put friends before the mission, he’s willing to offer his life when appropriate.
4 Weakness: Obito Has A Limited Number Of Ranged Attacks
Primarily relying on taijutsu and the Kamui, Obito is an extremely melee-oriented fighter. His lack of ranged tools is problematic, especially when going against opponents who are skilled at any distance, such as Naruto and Sasuke.
To Obito’s credit, his rudimentarily fire-style jutsu was destructive enough to obliterate Kakashi’s mud wall, and the Rinnegan expanded his arsenal considerably. However, since he rarely decides to use either of these tools in direct combat, he is fairly easy to predict and counter.
3 Strength: Obito Is Efficient At Using The Sharingan
Obito is a brilliant Sharingan user, which helps supplement his reflexes and keep up with the deadliest warriors in the Allied Shinobi Forces. He was even able to copy Kakashi’s jutsu and use it against him in the middle of their fight.
The villain’s most famous application of the Sharingan was against Konan. By unleashing the power of the Izanagi, he countered her carefully planned paper bombs and delivered a lethal counterattack. Although it cost him an eye, he intended to replace it with Nagato’s Rinnegan anyway.
2 Weakness: Obito Is Surprisingly Bad At Genjutsu
As a powerful character and member of the Uchiha clan, one might expect Obito to use genjutsu since it was a tradition practiced by many of his kin, including Sasuke, Shisui, and most famously, Itachi. Despite his prowess with the Sharingan, however, Obito virtually never uses genjutsu in battle.
Instead, he prefers a more direct approach against his opponents by anticipating their attacks, phasing through them, and retaliating after they’ve overcommitted. Should Obito have attempted to practice more with his illusionary abilities, he would’ve been even more formidable than the monster seen in the Fourth War.
1 Strength: Obito Has A High Pain Tolerance
As an experienced shinobi, Obito has impressive pain tolerance. He managed to survive having most of his body blown up by Konan, as the Izanagi could not completely negate its effects, which was proven through his shattered mask. Obito was also resilient enough to ask that Sakura rip out his Rinnegan eye with a kunai knife.
Doing so would have been excruciatingly painful, even if it provided a strategic advantage against the Allied Shinobi Forces’ remaining enemies. Ironically, it was Sakura’s hesitation that allowed Madara to enter the Kamui dimension and claim his prize.
