The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich shares a gorgeous image teasing work on Season 3 of the hit Netflix series.
The next season of Netflix’s The Witcher is underway, with showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich recently teasing some of the breath-taking locations being considered for Season 3.
On social media, Hissrich posted an image featuring the English countryside with the sun shining high in the sky. She noted, “[Ext. Woods – Day] The first scout of [The Witcher Season 3]!”
It was previously reported that filming for Season 3 of The Witcher is scheduled to begin in some time in March. Reports suggested production will take place at a new studio within the United Kingdom, where the rest of the series was shot. Production will be moved from Arborfield Studios in Berkshire to Longcross Studios in Surrey.
Netflix confirmed The Witcher for Season 3 in July, when showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich announced it, along with a number of other Witcher projects, at Netflix’s TUDUM event. Hissrich has since touched on plans for the upcoming season, including the fact that it will largely adapt Andrzej Sapkowski’s Time of Contempt, the second novel in the main Witcher saga.
Season 2 of The Witcher was released in December after a prolonged production period– hindered by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as well as on-set injuries sustained by star Henry Cavill. The second season of the hit-fantasy series was a critical success and reportedly amassed 462.5 million hours of view-time on Netflix in the first 28 days.
Time of Contempt sees Ciri begin her training in magic under the guidance of the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg. The novel also explores the machinations of the Continent’s most powerful rulers and magic-wielders, resulting in major changes between the kingdoms and different factions coming into light.
Hissrich previously teased that the Netflix adaptation will introduce more action in Season 3. She teased, “It’s a really fun season and it follows a particular book really closely. It has a lot of action, some death.” While the showrunner suggested a level of faithfulness to the source material, it’s worth noting that Season 2 of The Witcher introduced a number of major changes to both its characters and world with the death of Eskel and the introduction of Voleth Meir and early introduction of the Wild Hunt.
Both will play a major role in at least one of the upcoming spinoffs, such as The Witcher: Blood Origin, which will see the return of Voleth Meir and Eredin, King of the Wild Hunt. Hissrich suggested in a featurette that the focus on the ghostly riders was specifically intended to appeal to fans of CD Projekt Red’s Witcher video games.
