Stanley “Artgerm” Lau reveals his variant cover to Strange #1, depicting Clea as the Sorcerer Supreme in the wake of the Death of Doctor Strange.
Earth’s next Sorcerer Supreme shines on a variant cover for her first ongoing series, Strange.
The variant, illustrated by renowned artist Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, puts Clea into the iconic costume of her predecessor and ex, Doctor Stephen Strange. While this playful reimaging of Clea’s wardrobe is seemingly specific to Artgerm’s cover, it features many callbacks to her estranged lover, including the appearance of the Cloak of Levitation and Eye of Agamotto. The image is one of Marvel’s many variant covers commemorating Clea’s new role as Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme in Strange #1.
Clea is a Sorcerer from the Dark Dimension, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and debuting in Strange Tales #126. After a young Stephen Strange helped Dormammu defend the Dark Dimension, Clea traveled to Earth and familiarized herself with its people. Over time, Clea and Stephen fell in love and got married. Unfortunately, as Stephen became the Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme and Clea became the Sorcerer Supreme of the Dark Dimension, their responsibilities kept the would-be lovers apart for long periods of time. Eventually, Mephisto tricked Stephen into making a deal that saved reality from a cosmic threat at the cost of Clea’s memories of their relationship.
Such was the status quo for Clea and Stephen until the aptly titled Death of Doctor Strange. In that series, Stephen’s passing erased Mephisto’s magic and restored Clea’s memories of their time together. Though Clea was able to work with Earth’s remaining magic users to help bring Stephen back to life, their time together was limited, as Stephen knew he couldn’t accept Death. Not wanting to see Clea hurt further, Stephen accepted his fate and sacrificed himself for the greater good, abandoning his title as Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme.
Moving forward, Clea will be the lead character in Strange, written by Jed MacKay and drawn by Marcelo Ferreira. The title follows Clea as she tries to bring Stephen back to life and fights against new threats like the Blasphemy Syndicate. Speaking on the series, MacKay said, “It’s been really exciting to open up a new chapter in the world of Doctor (Clea) Strange, to get some new adventures going and some new weirdies on the table, and I can’t wait for folks to come along with us!”
Outside of comics, Marvel’s movies will continue to spotlight Earth’s magic-wielders in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film is due out May 7 and follows Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen as he attempts to repair reality with the help of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. Early reports from the film’s set suggested that Clea could appear in Multiverse of Madness, bringing her character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at roughly the same time as Strange #1’s release.
Strange #1, written by Jed MacKay, drawn by Marcelo Ferreira and colored by Sabine Rich, goes on sale March 2 from Marvel Comics.
