New merchandise for Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness offers the clearest look so far at the one-eyed monster, Gargantos.
A new piece of merch for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness provides the clearest look yet at one of the sequel’s villains: Gargantos.
The poster, available at Walmart, shows the one-eyed, tentacled Gargantos amongst the stars. This is the clearest look at the monster since its appearance in the first trailer for Multiverse of Madness, which premiered as a post-credit scene after Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The appearance of Gargantos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was first reported in July 2021 after a Mandy profile for actor Yenifer Molina showed that she was cast as “Gargantos 2” in an upcoming Marvel Studios film. At the time, it was not confirmed that the creature would appear in the Doctor Strange sequel.
The obscure, squid-like monster first appeared in Sub-Mariner #13 in 1969 from Marvel Comics, written by Roy Thomas and Marie Severin. After that, Gargantos would appear one more time, almost twenty years later, in a backup story by Peter Sanderson and Mark Bagely for X-Factor Annual #4. While Gargantos hasn’t appeared in the comics since, a similar creature appeared in Marvel’s animated What If…? series on Disney+, known as Shuma-Gorath.
Gargantos has previously appeared in promotional merchandise for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with official artwork for a 1000-piece puzzle from Marvel Studios showing Doctor Strange battling the one-eyed monster. Along with that, a leaked LEGO set for Multiverse of Madness teased the monster’s possible MCU debut ahead of the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The set, which is called “Gargantos Showdown,” sees Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Wong (Benedict Wong) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) in the midst of a battle with the sea monster.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness recently wrapped its reshoots, which began in mid-November 2021 and were described as “significant” at the time. The additional material was helmed by director Sam Raimi who was joined by writer Michael Waldron, the head writer for Marve’s Loki Disney+ series. Raimi took over directorial duties from Scott Derrickson, who directed the first film and departed the sequel over creative differences.
A previous report stated that those reshoots would include even more cameos and character introductions than originally intended. While the characters themselves haven’t been confirmed, sources report that the film will have “more fun with the multiverse” following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. A new line of Marvel Legends action figures for Multiverse of Madness offered a first look at the possible introduction of Rintrah to the MCU, an alien minotaur that appeared in Marvel Comics as one of Doctor Strange’s apprentices. Along with that, a leaked listing for another Marvel Legends figure may have also spoiled one of the film’s surprise villains, D’Spayre, though his involvement in the sequel has not been confirmed.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives May 6 in theaters.
