Avatar: 10 Strongest Non-Benders, Ranked

[ad_1]

Avatar the Last Airbender is filled with plenty of fantastical elements, but the most notable are the benders. Skilled in the art of manipulating water, earth, fire, or air, benders have the capabilities to destroy, defend themselves, heal injuries, and even fly.

With how popular and common bending is in Avatar, sometimes non-benders can get overlooked. Despite not having the same abilities as benders, a lot of non-benders have managed to prove their strength in other ways. Quite a few have even given experienced benders a run for their money.

10 Jet Has Held His Own Against Several Benders

Leader of the rebellious Freedom Fighters with a deep personal hatred for anything and anyone from the Fire Nation, Jet is a skilled fighter who’s gone toe-to-toe with quite a few benders. Wielding dual swords, Jet’s both fierce in offense and incredibly agile, especially in settings like forests. He’s a brilliant tactician as well.

On his own, Jet’s been able to keep up with strong benders like Aang, and his sword skills are on par with Zuko’s. While he’s by no means invincible and has been overpowered by benders, the fact that he’s held his own against several of them deserves acknowledgment.

9 Guru Pathik Is Strong In Focus & Spirit

6 guru pathik and aang

Guru Pathik is a mysterious man with great knowledge of enlightenment and the Spirit World, despite not being a bender or even a bridge between those worlds like the Avatar. His wisdom and expertise in both chi and chakras made him a great teacher for Aang when he attempted to help him unlock the Avatar State. He also helped Aang make peace with himself.

While Pathik is not a fighter by any stretch, his spirituality and inner focus give him a certain understanding of people and animals that helped him live much longer than the average human being. Guru Pathik is roughly 150 years old.

8 Most Of The Rough Rhinos Are Non-Benders

The Non-Benders in the Rough Rhinos, Avatar the Last Airbender

The Rough Rhinos were known as an elite group of mercenaries that rode atop the backs of komodo rhinos and worked under the Fire Nation. While their leader, Mongke, was a firebender, the rest of the Rough Rhinos were non-benders who each specialized in their signature weapons.

Despite the lack of bending talent on the team, the Rough Rhinos’ skills and teamwork made them quite the threat for Team Avatar as well as Zuko and Iroh at one point. That being said, they were still bested in each and every appearance they made.

7 June Is Strong Enough To Toss Grown Men Like Ragdolls

June, Avatar the Last Airbender

June was known far and wide as one of the most fearsome bounty hunters to ever live. Allied with no nation during the war, June’s services go to whoever’s willing to pay her the most. Alongside her shirshu steed, Nyla, she was willing to do whatever it took to get the job done.

Armed with her whip and a lot of physical strength that allows her to toss grown men around like they’re nothing, it’s no surprise why June was such an effective bounty hunter. If that wasn’t enough, Nyla’s attuned tracking abilities and paralyzing tongue made escaping from June no easy feat.

6 Hakoda Has Fought Firebenders For Years

A warrior of the Southern Water Tribe and father to Sokka and Katara, Hakoda’s skills in battle are complemented by his bravery. Hakoda’s time fighting against the Fire Nation has given him mastery in hand-to-hand combat as well as various weapons, which has allowed him to take on multiple bending opponents and win.

On top of being physically tough, Hakoda also has a keen strategic mind that’s quickly able to adapt to new situations. This trait has gotten himself and others out of tough spots, such as the prison known as the Boiling Rock. For Hakoda, the experience made him just as strong, if not stronger, than any single bender.

5 Mai Is An Extremely Deadly Markswoman

ATLA Mai Throwing Knives

A close ally to Azula and a member of her small task force, Mai quickly proved herself to be just as dangerous as any firebender in the Fire Nation. Mai’s an incredibly skilled markswoman, able to throw knives, shurikens, and other small weapons with extreme accuracy and enough force to cause fatal injuries or keep a bender’s arms pinned down.

While Mai’s best skills are long-distance, she’s also fast and agile, which makes her evasive enough to dodge enemy attacks from up close or far away. Alone, Mai can take down multiple benders and keep notable characters like Katara or Aang on their toes.

4 Sokka Grew Into A Warrior That Fights Strong & Smart

While he may have started out as a comedic relief weaker link in Team Avatar, Sokka goes on to prove that you don’t need to be a bender to be a capable warrior. Sokka is skilled with a variety of weapons, such as clubs, his signature boomerang, and a sword made from a meteorite. His most valuable asset, however, has been his mind.

Able to adapt quickly and think outside the box, Sokka’s become a keen tactician and a problem solver that’s been able to come up with plans that have saved the day countless times. Just like his father, Sokka grew into a strong, brilliant Southern Water Tribe warrior.

3 Ty Lee’s An Acrobat Who Can Easily Immobilize Benders

Ty Lee, Running Along Cables, Avatar the Last Airbender

Despite her friendly and cheery demeanor, Ty Lee was one of the most formidable adversaries Team Avatar had ever faced. Another ally of Azula, Ty Lee’s acrobatic skills made her a highly agile and mobile target who’s been able to outmaneuver and overpower both bending and non-bending opponents.

Ty Lee’s fierce in hand-to-hand combat and never needs a weapon in a fight, but her most terrifying ability is her chi blocking. By hitting precise pressure points, Ty Lee can paralyze her opponents by making their limbs numb and even temporarily cut off benders from their bending.

2 Suki Leads Her Own Band Of Kyoshi Warriors

Suki fights as Kyoshi Island burns

Compassion, a strong will, and ferocity in battle are only some of Suki’s best traits. The leader of her band of Kyoshi Warriors, Suki is an adept fighter who’s just as skilled with her bare hands as she is with her war fans. She’s also capable of using her surroundings to her advantage.

Suki’s physically strong enough to take down opponents twice her size and agile enough to keep up with the likes of Ty Lee. After the war, Suki even learned chi blocking from Ty Lee herself, adding on to her already immense skill set that can stand up to any enemy in her way.

1 Piandao Took Down Hundreds Of Opponents By Himself

A former officer of the Fire Nation military and a member of the White Lotus, Piandao is one of the most accomplished non-benders in the series, and quite possibly the strongest and most skilled. With a sword in his hand, Piandao has incorporated the style of benders and other fighters into his own techniques.

Considered to be the best swordsman in Fire Nation history, Piandao’s reputation comes from the fact that he’s never lost a battle even once, including the time he defeated a hundred Fire Nation soldiers on his own after leaving the army.
