Peacemaker Beats Wonder Woman as the DCEU’s Highest Reviewed Project

Shortly after its series premiere, HBO Max’s Peacemaker becomes the highest-reviewed project in the DC Extended Universe, just ahead of Wonder Woman.

With only four episodes out so far, Peacemaker became the highest-reviewed project in the DC Extended Universe.

According to Forbes, HBO Max’s The Suicide Squad spinoff series currently has the highest score of any other DCEU project on Rotten Tomatoes with a 94% score on the Tomatometer. This puts Peacemaker just ahead of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (2017) starring Gal Gadot, which comes in second at 93%. “This is great. Even more, I’m moved by how people all around the world are coming to love Chris, Leota, Adrian, Emilia, & John,” series creator James Gunn said. “On behalf of the whole cast & crew: Thank you!”

Coming in third on the list is The Suidice Squad (2021) with 90%, also written and directed by Gunn, from which Peacemaker spins out. Currently, the lowest-reviewed DCEU project is David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), with a 26% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The first three episodes of Peacemaker premiered on HBO Max on Jan. 13. While there are eight episodes set to air overall for the show’s first season, only seven were shown to critics before the series premiere. According to Gunn, this was to avoid any potential spoilers.

“I wouldn’t let them put out eight,” Gunn said in a recent interview. “They wanted to put out all eight. I said, ‘No way. No chance in hell are we putting out all eight.’ There’s just too many things [that] happen in episode eight that I just could not let it get out there. It would absolutely be spoiled. You know, I wouldn’t even let them give it to one place or anything like that because it just wasn’t… I didn’t want it to be out there.”

Announced as a television series in 2020, Peacemaker picks up after the events of The Suicide Squad, with John Cena reprising his role as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker for the HBO Max original series. Peacemaker, now recovered from the bullet wound given to him by Bloodsport, is drafted into an off-the-books mission known as Project Butterfly, with ARGUS agents Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), John Economos (Steve Agee), Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) and Leota Abedayo (Danielle Brooks), as well as Adrian Chase/Vigilante (Freddie Stroma).

Gunn has previously stated that DC Films and HBO Max let him go “hog wild” for the series, giving him plenty of freedom in this addition to the DCEU. When Peacemaker was first announced, Gunn called the series “an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.” He said, “I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series.”

New episodes of Peacemaker drop every Thursday on HBO Max.
