Loki Episode 4 May Homage Last Jedi’s Throne Room Scene

In the fourth episode of Loki, he and Sylvie take part in a massive fight scene, but this scene may also homage a massive battle in The Last Jedi.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Loki Episode 4,”The Nexus Event,” streaming now on Disney+.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always bumped shoulders with the Star Wars universe when referencing its media, from Peter Parker’s comments about The Empire Strikes Back to the running gag in Phase 2 where several characters lost a hand or arm like Luke Skywalker. However, in Loki Episode 4, “The Nexus Event,” there’s a scene that may homage the biggest fight sequence in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.

In The Last Jedi, Rey is taken to Supreme Leader Snoke’s throne room, where Kylo Ren is meant to sacrifice her to grow more powerful. Instead, he chooses to kill his master, and a massive fight sequence breaks out with the duo teaming up to take on the Elite Praetorian Guards. Because of how well the scene is filmed, an eagle-eyed Redditor was able to find multiple parallels in the fight between Loki and The Last Jedi.

Much like The Last Jedi, Loki’s climactic fight sequence begins with Loki and Sylvie being sent to the enigmatic Time-Keepers to be pruned from existence. Interestingly, the Time-Keepers wear a similar cloaked outfit to Snoke’s. Because Loki and Sylvie have been so problematic for them, the Time-Keepers decide to see their deaths firsthand, but their plans go awry when Hunter B-15 breaks in, frees the Gods of Mischief and returns Sylvie’s sword. Much like in The Last Jedi, the two characters face back to back. However, rather than facing guards, they’re facing the Time Variance Authority’s Minutemen.

Much like the Praetorian Guards, the Minutemen are incredibly skilled fighters and give Loki and Sylvie a bit of a challenge. Loki even gets a cut on the same arm as Rey as did. The Minutemen also use staff-like weapons similar to the guards. However, unlike The Last Jedi, the fight scene focuses more on faster cuts and hand-to-hand choreography.

The fight is also much faster until certain shots where the camera will linger on a particular moment. One moment is when Loki stabs one of the Minutemen in the stomach in a frame that looks eerily similar to when Kylo Ren drives his lightsaber through a guard.

The fight scene ends with Sylvie beheading one of the Time-Keepers only to discover they were robots all along. Killing a Time-Keeper was a shocking surprise, similar to when Kylo Ren killed Snoke. It was utterly unexpected and left the viewer wondering how the story was going to continue. When compiled together, it’s hard to believe that the Loki scene hasn’t, in some capacity, acknowledged Star Wars in a new way for the MCU.

While it’s divisive for most of the fanbase, The Last Jedi offers some of the best visuals Star Wars has to offer. As a result, it’s no surprise Loki’s creators would want to homage these moments, especially with a scene that represents such a major change for the characters in the story and the universe as a whole. However, instead of Rey and Kylo Ren finding their own paths, it’s Loki and Sylvie realizing the rabbit hole goes deeper than either expected. If the Time-Keepers’ sequence truly parallels the throne room battle from The Last Jedi, it shows just how clever Loki’s creators are and how the MCU continues to acknowledge another great series.

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane and Eugene Cordero. New episodes air Wednesdays on Disney+.
