Dungeons Masters in D&D have plenty of monsters to choose from to challenge a low-level party of adventurers, including some of the most iconic monsters in the game. While most creature types have a range of weaker and stronger examples available, certain ones tend more towards the lower end of the spectrum than others.
Many of these creatures retain some of the characteristics common to their type, but without the stacks of hit points, spells, and attacks that separate them from the truly powerful monsters in the game. Others are simply pushovers in every regard, without anything that might make them a threat to any adventurer.
8 Lesser Fiends Are Pitiful Servants To Their Masters
While some fiendish creatures, such as the highest-ranking devils and demons, may be among the most powerful creatures a team of adventurers may encounter, the vast majority are much weaker than their masters, though they can still pose a threat in numbers.
The lowest of the low are the Lemures and Manes, the most base types of devils and demons respectively. While they may be terrifying to behold, they won’t be a danger to a moderately well-prepared adventurer, despite having some of the typical resistances and immunities one might expect from this creature type.
7 Oozes Are The Messiest Enemies In The Game
Any adventuring party who for whatever reason decides to traverse through the sewers of a city has a strong chance of coming across an ooze, a gelatinous creature that will eat anything it comes across. While they may be squishy, fighting these creatures may be a painful experience, as many deal acid damage used to dissolve their prey.
While the most common oozes, such as the Gelatinous Cube and Ochre Jelly, may not be the most dangerous creatures a group might encounter, they should still be approached with caution, as many of these creature types tend to have unique abilities that can cause plenty of trouble for the unwary.
6 Constructs Are Not Always Towering Golems
It is common for mages and artificers skilled in transmutation to learn the art of imbuing objects and creations with magic, but before they can begin creating the most powerful golems, they usually practice their skills on much simpler, and less menacing, constructs.
The homunculus is one such creation that is often made to be a wizard’s familiar. Other wizards often fashion constructs such as Flying Swords and Magic Carpets to protect and assist them as they pursue their magical endeavors and deal with whatever the world will throw at them.
5 Fey Are Fickle And Mischievous
It is not uncommon for an unwary party traipsing through the deep woods to find themselves on the receiving end of some fey’s unfortunate prank. This might be the best outcome one might hope for, as these fickle creatures are known to cause trouble for any they come across.
While they may be unapologetic troublemakers, the typical fey is not overly dangerous on its own. Creatures such as sprites and dryads won’t be much of a threat, though don’t underestimate the tiny pixies, as their polymorph ability may have some rather powerful applications.
4 Undead Hordes Make Great Fodder For New Adventurers
While the undead mages known as liches are among the most well-known and dangerous creatures one might encounter in D&D, the typical adventurer will be far more familiar with lesser undead such as skeletons and zombies.
While individually, these creatures will pose only a minor threat even to a low-level adventurer, when they attack in numbers that can quickly pose much more of a problem. Often encountered in dank crypts or ancient dungeons, any party expecting to face undead will do well to have a cleric on hand to rain holy fury down upon them.
3 Plant Creatures Are Easy To Mow Down
Plant-type creatures are one of the more rare kinds of enemies one might encounter in Dungeons and Dragons. They are also one of the few types without any sort of high-level creature, with the highest challenge rating belonging to the Treant, at nine.
Despite their relative rarity, there are actually some fairly interesting varieties of plant creatures in the game suitable for low-level adventurers to come across, such as Blights and Vegepygmys, or the sentient fungus-creatures known as Myconids.
2 Humanoids Are Most Party’s First Enemies
Quite possibly the most varied of all creature types in the game, humanoids come in a vast array of forms, such as goblinoids, humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, and much more. While some humanoids may become quite powerful through training or other means, the typical examples of these kinds are among some of the weakest creatures in the game.
It is not uncommon for goblins to be some of the first creatures a group may encounter on a low-level adventure, and while orcs and bandits may pose a threat to new adventurers, most higher-leveled parties will be able to make short work of them. Dungeon Master’s who know the game well may be able to make these enemies more dangerous by using clever tactics against the party.
1 Beasts Sit At The Bottom Of The Food Chain
By far the most common creature to appear should one sort the available monsters by the lowest challenge rating, beasts reign supreme as the weakest creatures in the game. While they come in a large variety, most do not even have a CR of one, with the highest being the Tyrannosaurus Rex at eight.
This makes perfect sense, as the majority of beast-type creatures are animals such as birds, beavers, pigs, and horses. The giant versions of these animals are a bit more dangerous, and should a low-level party encounter a Cave Bear or Dire Wolf, they may be in trouble, but for the most part these creatures are more likely to end up the hunted rather than the hunter for a skilled team of adventurers.
