As the Shadow of the Bat event begins a new threat may be brewing in the background. In the backup story “House of Gotham: Chapter One” in Detective Comics #1047 (by Matthew Rosenberg, Fernando Blanco, Jordie Bellaire, Rob Leigh), a trip to the past revealed that Batman may have inadvertently created Gotham City’s newest villain. This new character, only known as the Boy, has a similar origin to Bruce Wayne, but his perception and anger towards the Batman may set him on the path to become a twisted version of the Dark Knight.
The issue began with the normal, idyllic life of a young boy upended by the Joker, who broke into his family’s apartment to murder his parents for “bothering him” The Boy was hidden away before the Joker could find him, but watched as they were cut down by the clown prince of crime. So right off the bat, the Boy had similar beginnings to Batman, his parents murdered by a criminal in front of him. Unlike young Bruce Wayne however, the Boy found his father’s gun and intended to shoot the Joker when the clown realized that there was one more person in the apartment.
That was when Batman made the scene. The Joker fled before the Dark Knight could catch him, but due to a combination of the trauma, his young age, and the timing of it all, the Boy assumed that Batman and Joker were friends who were responsible for his parents’ deaths. Batman tried to explain that he wasn’t responsible, but had to leave before the police arrived. At that stage of his career, Batman had yet to fully garner the trust of the GCPD and he had no choice but to trust that the Boy would be placed into good hands.
Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from what happened. With child protective services seemingly apathetic to his plight and the hospitals full, the Boy was relocated to Arkham Asylum for the foreseeable future. This meant that instead of receiving the care and attention he would have needed, his trauma would most likely be compounded upon by whatever criminals were locked up in there at the time. Even worse, the Boy already blamed Batman for his parents’ murder, and he was going to a place filled with Batman’s enemies. This could be seen as an opportunity by other villains who might use the boy as a tool of revenge.
They could build upon his hatred of the Batman, teaching him the various skills he would need to be a credible threat to the Dark Knight when he was old enough. As it stands, the Boy is not deemed insane, just traumatized. He’d likely be in Arkham for only a brief stint before going to see a proper therapist and then be free to roam the world. If the Arkham inmates all band together to teach him how to fight, he could become a broken version of Batman, molded by Gotham’s worst instead of the world’s best.
