Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Zöe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman feature in two promotional stills from Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

A new image from Matt Reeves’ The Batman focus on the tense relationship between Bruce Wayne/Batman (Robert Pattinson) and Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zöe Kravitz).

The first of two photos released by USA Today shows Pattinson out of the batsuit as Bruce Wayne, with wet hair hanging around his face and a tear in the top of his black t-shirt. This image was originally revealed exclusively by Empire in December, though now appears without the magazine’s watermark. The other image released by USA Today, which is brand-new, sees Pattinson in full Batman costume opposite Kravitz’s maskless Catwoman. Batman has a tight grip on her upper arm as the sun sets behind them.

According to a German synopsis for The Batman, the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle may have been changed in a very significant way by making them childhood friends. The synopsis says that “Gotham is being hit by a gruesome series of crimes that the police have long been unable to cope with,” and that even Batman “reaches his limits.” It then goes on to tease that the “appearance of his childhood friend Selina Kyle” creates “creates additional emotional confusion” for Wayne.

Although the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle in The Batman promises to be volatile and complicated, Kravitz recently revealed that her most difficult co-stars were the cats she had to work with. “The funniest thing would be us getting ready to shoot and we’d have these cat wranglers come in who had these toys to make the cats stay on their marks,” she recalled, “and it would kinda work, but not really. So, it ended up that we were always waiting for the cats — like we’d be ready to go, but then the cat would decide to move.”

As well as Catwoman, Pattinson’s Batman will also have to contend with some other iconic Batman villains such as Paul Dano’s Riddler and Colin Farrell’s Penguin. Much like the relationship between Wayne and Kyle, Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin will also face some changes. “There’s no top hat [in The Batman],” Farrell revealed about his costume. “There is one scene where I have an umbrella in my hand, but it doesn’t have a trigger on the handle. He does have a limping gait, so there is somewhat of a waddle there. But Oz is not yet fully inhabiting the mythology of the Penguin and doesn’t take too kindly to the moniker.”

Matt Reeves’ The Batman opens in theaters on March 4, 2022.
