Loki writer Eric Martin reveals a deleted scene from Episode 5 had all of the Loki variants joining forces to battle Alioth in The Void.

A deleted scene from Loki Episode 5, “Journey Into Mystery,” had the God of Mischief’s variants joining forces for a major showdown.
According to Loki writer Eric Martin (who penned Episode 4, “The Nexus Event”), Tom Kaufman’s script for Episode 5 originally ended with a “hilarious [scene] where all the Variant [Lokis] showed up to also confront Alioth because they couldn’t let our Loki outshine them.” This differs from the final version, which has Classic Loki selflessly distracting and getting killed by the Alioth. That gives Loki and Sylvie the opening they need to enchant the creature, revealing “a portal to the end of time,” as Martin described it.

“Everyone was so excited to have [Richard E. Grant as Classic Loki] for this episode,” wrote Martin. “I mean, he’s Withnail, after all. And he could not have been more humble and excited to be there.” He added that Grant “did take after take with industrial fans blowing in his face and nothing to act against but blue curtains and brought such emotion to every take [for Episode 5’s climax]. He was such a joy to watch.”
During a recent interview, Loki head writer Michael Waldron revealed Classic Loki was the result of a “thought experiment” where he asked the question, “What if Loki did in fact survive the events of Avengers: Infinity War?” This led to the character’s backstory, in which he fakes his death at Thanos’ hands and spends many years living along on a remote planet, allowing him to flying under the Time Variance Authority’s radar until he re-emerges, no longer able to bear the loneliness. “It was that tragic thing where he finally realizes ‘I’m meant to be alone.’ It is just so sad,” said Waldron.
Of course, Classic Loki is one of the more emotionally grounded Loki variants featured in Episode 5. Other variants, like the alligator variant and the much-ballyhooed President Loki, are far more ridiculous and comical in the way they’re presented.
