Josuke and Jolyne are the protagonists of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Diamond is Unbreakable and Stone Ocean, respectively. They embody a continuation of the Joestar bloodline well after the stories of legends like Jotaro and Joseph have mostly ended. Exemplifying resilience and bravery, both live up to and surpass the expectations associated with their family name.
Throughout their respective narratives, each hero demonstrates similarities and differences to one another. Josuke and Jolyne have more than just their Joestar lineage in common, but there are also significant differences between these two JJBA protagonists.
10 Difference: Josuke’s Stand Is Far Less Versatile Than Jolyne’s
Josuke’s Shining Diamond is far less versatile than Jolyne’s Stone Ocean. Although its ability to heal can return others from the brink of death, he cannot use it on himself. Shining Diamond even managed to summon Okuyasu back from beyond the grave.
Conversely, Jolyne is able to eavesdrop on conversations, strangle enemies from miles away, and even create a protective web in order to defend herself from a torrent of poisonous frogs. This allows her to survive in situations that could have been a death sentence for Josuke.

Josuke and Jolyne both incorporate their youth into their stories, although it manifests in different ways. Josuke’s high school plays a significant role in Diamond is Unbreakable‘s setting. Moreover, his battle against enemy Stand users places his mother at risk, as proven through his encounter with Terunosuke.
Youth factored into Jolyne’s story by inhibiting her judgment. When Romeo helped arrange a murder, Jolyne’s weakness for romance and trust in her lawyer both contributed to her downfall. Her biggest fear for going to prison is that her youth would be wasted, better tying both characters’ themes together.
8 Difference: Jolyne’s Goal Is More Proactive Than Josuke’s
Jolyne has assumed a more active and coherent role in the narrative than Josuke. She wants to escape prison regardless of the cost, which later evolves into saving Jotaro from Pucci. Conversely, Josuke’s story meanders around Morioh until Reimi and Yoshikage Kira are discovered almost halfway into the narrative. After a confrontation near a tailoring shop, he is promptly forgotten about until Hayato’s investigation finally gives them the lead they need to enact justice once and for all.
7 Similarity: Both Characters Share A Proximity To Jotaro
Josuke and Jolyne share a surprisingly similar relationship with Jotaro. They are initially hostile upon their first introduction, but quickly warm up to him after putting differences aside. He introduced the heroes to the world of Stands and the Speedwagon Foundation, both of which proved invaluable to their futures.
Furthermore, Jotaro serves as their vehicle to launch the main plot and introduce the antagonist of the act. He also fights alongside them on a number of instances, as demonstrated through the battles against Bug-Eaten and Johngalli A. Jotaro is easily a fan-favorite JoJo.
6 Difference: Josuke Was Born With His Stand & Jolyne Was Not
Most people obtain their Stand in one of two ways. They’re either born with it, such as Josuke, Polnareff, and Kakyoin; or they receive their power through a Stand arrow, like Jolyne, Koichi, and Yuya Fungami. Jotaro’s decision to give Jolyne a Stand is particularly relevant when considering the connotations. Whoever is exposed to the metal of a Stand arrow risks death when achieving their awesome power, which entails how dire Jolyne’s circumstances must have been to receive such a macabre gift.
5 Similarity: Both Heroes Face Enemies Around Every Corner
It’s a stated reality that Stand users are naturally drawn to one another, regardless of their friendliness. The people that Josuke and Jolyne encountered have both been extraordinarily malevolent, with more characters set on defeating them. Many of Jolyne’s enemies are due to the prison’s brutally Darwinian nature and the clandestine machinations of Father Pucci. Although some of Josuke’s enemies were created by Yoshihiro Kira in an attempt to stall the investigation, he was battling enemy Stand users well before he knew of Yoshikage’s existence.
4 Difference: Josuke & Jolyne Have Different Policies On Romance
Jolyne and Josuke have drastically different views on romance. This was demonstrated during Jolyne’s interactions with Romeo, where she was willing to naively take the blame for his crime and even regarded him nostalgically after his treachery came to light.
Conversely, Josuke has never considered romance in spite of the opportunities he’s had. The relationship between Yukako and Koichi did nothing to inspire him even after it became substantially healthier and reciprocating. In the end, Josuke would rather focus on adventures with friends than pursue a significant other.
3 Similarity: Josuke & Jolyne Are Both Aggressive When Provoked
Josuke and Jolyne are dangerous to those who have wronged or insulted them. Rohan’s decision to mock Josuke’s hair threw him into such a rage that he completely ignored the effects of Heaven’s Door to pummel Rohan instead.
When Jolyne learned about her lawyer’s underhanded motives, she was inconsolable. After vowing to escape prison, she unleashed Stone Ocean and used it to strangle him while he attempted to escape. It resulted in a fatal car crash and marked the beginning of her adventures behind stone walls.
2 Difference: Jolyne & Josuke Disagree On Forgiveness
Josuke is a conventional protagonist in the sense that he will often recruit those he has defeated as friends. This was primarily evident through his interaction with Okuyasu and was relevant again with Rohan Kishibe. Jolyne isn’t nearly as forgiving.
When Gwess tried to exonerate herself for forcing Jolyne to act like a pet, Jolyne’s response was less than favorable. Despite this, she was willing to forgive F.F’s attack since she knew it wasn’t personal and respected how much the discs meant to them. The creature has expressed their gratitude through their actions ever since.
1 Similarity: Jolyne & Josuke Use Their Brains Over Brawn
Josuke and Jolyne both prefer to use wits over raw power in battle. This was seen during the fight against Yoshikage Kira, where Josuke managed to uncover Yoshihiro’s infiltration and turn it against him. He also used Shining Diamond’s healing powers to bombard the villain with devastating shards of glass.
Similarly, Jolyne used Stone Ocean in order to survive against villains like Gwess, Johngalli A, and even F.F. She used the latter’s passion for discs to lure them away from water and into a place where they could be subdued most easily.
