Yelena’s Hawkeye Gear Includes a Hidden Black Widow Easter Egg Accessory

Hawkeye costume designer Michael Crow explains how the fashion of Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova holds references to the character’s Black Widow past.

Florence Pugh sports many iconic looks as Yelena Belova and some of her accessories in Disney+’s Hawkeye series are direct references to the character’s past as a Black Widow.

Hawkeye costume designer Michael Crow offered some insight into the choice of flair that Yelena wears on her striking coat in Episode 5, “Ronin,” during an interview with Insider. “It was another carryover from her costume from the end of Black Widow that she had lots of enamel pins,” Crow explained. There’s a direct and obvious link to the film in the form of a spider pin. There’s also a pin that’s even more personal to Yelena herself: a finger gun.

“One of them is sort of a finger gun, which was the name of a production company for Hawkeye,” Crow added. “That’s also something that Florence really liked because it’s something that Yelena does in Black Widow a couple of times. She thought it was a cool reference to Yelena and I thought it was a fun nod to our production company.”

Even the coat itself is special, according to Crow. “The coat she wears in the scene with Kate in the loft, we were both in love with because it was so weird,” said the costume designer. “I found two of them online and there were the last two in the world so it was just meant to be.” Costumers generally like to have at least one copy of each costume available on set, just in case a backup is needed, so this find was clearly significant for Crow.

Yelena’s style even carried over into a comics-accurate look during her introduction to the series. A teaser trailer titled “Hit the Mark” offered a quick glimpse of Yelena wearing an all-black outfit with green night-vision goggles. This was interpreted by fans as a throwback to one of the character’s Marvel Comics ensembles: a full-body black leather bodysuit topped by a mask with spider-like green lenses.

Since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pugh has helped shape the character of Yelena Belova, from her personality to her fashion choices, which began at the encouragement of Black Widow director Cate Shortland. “I think something that I really appreciated was Cate was so welcoming of me to figure out how she thinks and how she moves and what she wears,” Pugh said. “I think, for me, that was such a fun part of figuring out this character because she really comes out of the Red Room and can start life, and she can buy her own clothes, and she can buy a vest that has lots of pockets and she’s really excited by it.”

Yelena herself has been a popular addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe overall. From her quippy relationship with sister Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) in Black Widow to her immediate chemistry with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) on Hawkeye, Pugh has made the character an engaging and irreverent part of the MCU.

The full season of Hawkeye is streaming now on Disney+.
