The X-Men are one of the largest and most diverse superhero teams in the Marvel Universe. At this point in time, the X-Men are less like a team and more like a family. As the saying goes, people can’t always choose their family. As a result, there are many mutants who have come and gone from the X-Men’s ranks over the years.
For many different reasons, the X-Men have never enjoyed a consistent roster over the years. This frequent rotation has allowed many different heroes to join their ranks and bring new advantages to the team. However, it also means some incredibly heavy hitters have come and gone from their roster.
9 Colossus Left After A Family Tragedy
Colossus is one of the most recognizable X-Men in the world, largely due to the fact that he’s a hulking Russian man who can turn his whole body into organic steel. The gentle giant has been a longtime member of the world’s most feared and hated team ever since he was recruited by Professor X in 1975.
However, once the Legacy Virus began to kill mutants everywhere, Colossus was put in a difficult position, especially after his beloved sister Illyana was the first victim of the virus. The grief of losing his sister, as well as the brain damage he sustained which caused him to remain in his armored form, led Colossus to rethink his position on the X-Men. He ended up leaving to join Magneto’s Acolytes for a brief time.
8 Rogue Has Always Had A Complicated Past
Rogue has been one of the X-Men’s wildcards for decades. This is due to her uncanny mutant ability to absorb the lifeforce, memories, and powers of any organic living being she comes into physical contact with. This extraordinary power has caused Rogue to limit her physical contact with others out of fear, and many attempts to gain control of this power have made her a unquantifiable variable.
Rogue did take a hiatus from the team in order to join the Avengers Unity Division – a team personally assembled by Captain America, which featured a medley of humans and mutants to give the world more pro-mutant press and combat threats to both humans and mutants.
7 Gambit Works Better Alone
Remy LeBeau has always been known for his cunning. He’s a celebrated member of the Thieves Guild, however, the Cajun has a very complicated past due to his upbringing on the streets of New Orleans. Remy’s idea of home is a very scattered concept, which has contributed to him not staying on the X-Men for long periods of time.
As well as his inherent affinity for wandering, Remy is also one of the most overlooked and surprisingly powerful mutants in the X-Men’s ranks. With the mutant power to kinetically charge any object, Remy keeps his playing cards on him for instant access, but he has the ability to cause immense havoc.
6 Cyclops Has Struggled With Grief And Has Left The Team To Process
Scott Summers was the first X-Man recruited by Charles Xavier, and ever since, he’s fully embodied Xavier’s teachings. He’s a living example of what Xavier’s mantra really reflected for mutantkind. An incredibly powerful mutant with an optic blast that could shatter mountains, Cyclops has long been considered one of the X-Men’s best.
Cyclops has been known to struggle with his place on the X-Men, having quit for multiple reasons: usually in the same vein of grief and mourning. Scott has quit the team over the death of Jean Grey and left in order to marry Madelyne Pryor and raise their son. However, he always returns eventually.
5 Professor Xavier Chose To Travel Alone After Coming Back From The Dead
One of the strongest telepaths the world has ever known, Charles Xavier founded the X-Men. He started an incredible journey that paved the way for the rights of mutant-kind. His telepathic ability has stunned the world time and time again, and its amplification alongside the work of the machine Cerebro makes Xavier a dominating force.
Despite founding the team, Charles has been known to take a hiatus from the group from time to time. After relinquishing leadership of the team to Scott Summers, Xavier traveled across the country on his own in the X-Men: Legacy book in 2008. He was on the road to recovery after being revived after the events of Messiah Complex during which he was killed by the mutant Bishop.
4 Magneto Left To Pursue His Own Form Of Vengeance
Faced with the near-extinction of the mutant race in 2010, Magneto decided to let bygones be bygones. He chose to surrender himself and join the X-Men, buying into their goal of mutant preservation. Since joining them, Magneto has proven that he’s one of their strongest members.
Despite his membership on the team, Magneto took a hiatus from the X-Men to use his own resources to track down several anti-mutant hate groups and brandish them with his own form of justice. This included attacking Mutant Growth Hormone traffickers, and attacking and killing the Red Skull, who had bolstered his powers with the brain of his friend, Charles Xavier.
3 Jubilee Wanted To Grow As A Person On Her Own
Jubilation Lee (better known as Jubilee) became a hit on the X-Men due to the success of X-Men: The Animated Series, and was a mainstay on the team throughout the 80s and 90s. Her fun, youthful energy and troublesome demeanor made her a fan-favorite character, and her moxie gained her the respect of the rest of the team – especially Wolverine.
Jubilee, despite being one of the younger members of the team, quit the X-Men to travel the world on her own, checking in now and then with the team and her many friends. She eventually returned to the ranks of the team in the mid-2010s, now with an adopted son by the name of Shogo.
2 Storm Left The Team To Rule A Nation
Ororo Munroe has long been considered one of the X-Men’s heavy hitters. She’s an omega-level mutant with the ability to control the weather. Consequently, Storm has been a mainstay in the team for years. She’s an iconic member who’s always one of the first to be named in the conversations of the X-Men’s “best of all time.”
Storm’s high favor in the team is even more impressive considering the time she’s spent away from the X-Men. Always one to forge her own path, Storm has set off on her own and left the team on many occasions, including when she took a break from the team to become the Queen of Wakanda and rule over the kingdom with her new husband, the Black Panther, T’Challa.
1 Juggernaut Was Always Bound To Leave The X-Men
Cain Marko, the half-brother of Charles Xavier, became the “Unstoppable” Juggernaut after he harnessed the power of the mystical and mysterious Crimson Gem of Cytorrak. The Juggernaut has become one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, having come to blows with the X-Men on many occasions. However, he’s also joined the team on a few adventures in an unlikely turn of events.
Due to his possession by the Gem of Cytorrak, Marko is known for his incendiary personality, which often clashes with the rest of the X-Men. Despite helping the team on multiple occasions, Marko often chooses to remain a one-man army, leaving the team shortly after joining.
