Plenty of anime heroes have gone undercover for various reasons. Whether it be because they wanted to infiltrate a villainous organization, they wanted to sneak into a forbidden space, or they simply wanted to keep their identity a secret, going undercover is a common but effective tactic.
Unfortunately, not all heroes have what it takes to keep that disguise up for very long, and they often find themselves in hot water. Sometimes, this is because another character, good or bad, figures out their disguise. Other times, they simply tell on themselves.
10 Aang’s Old Man Disguise Was Blown On The Omashu Mail Chute In Avatar
On a lighter note, the Avatar, Aang, an air nomad who had been preserved in an iceberg for around a century tried to enter Omashu disguised as an old man. What he did not count on was his old friend, Bumi, being alive and still in the city of Omashu.
So, when Aang (still in his disguise), Katara, and Sokka all took a ride on the Omashu mail chute, King Bumi had a pretty good idea of who the culprit was. After a quick test to prove that Aang was an Airbender, not only was his old man cover blown, so too was his hidden Airbender identity.
9 Sailors Neptune & Uranus Didn’t Pull One Over On Galaxia In Sailor Moon
Sailors Neptune and Uranus were inseparable right down to their comrades’ betrayal. The two joined Galaxia, one of the series’ toughest villains, much to everyone else’s dismay. Galaxia had already had them on the ropes. However, the duo only did this to pull one over on Galaxia.
Unfortunately, Galaxia saw through them, and despite all they had done to put themselves in Galaxia’s good graces and gain her trust, they quickly threw that all away with their feeble attempt at stopping Galaxia. Needless to say, it did not work.
8 Code Geass’ Lelouch Was Eventually Discovered To Be Zero
Lelouch was a brilliant tactician who had to go up against a huge military force run by one of the strongest entities in the world, the Britannian Royal Family. However, he was determined to push back at Britannia in whatever ways he could, and he almost succeeded.
His best strategy was his alter ego, Zero, which not only served as a way to protect his identity but also functioned as a symbol to those who wanted to fight against Britannian oppression. What’s more, with Zero as an alter ego, he was free to make Zero into the bad guy when he needed to.
7 Gray Fullbuster Outed Himself In Fairy Tail
Gray Fullbuster went undercover and joined the dark mage guild, Avatar, which was full of cultists. However, Natsu and Lucy got in the way. To keep his cover from being blown, he had Erza tell Natsu and Lucy the whole story. Eventually, they got on the same page and were able to confront the Avatar cultists.
Seeing that the time was ripe, Gray rejoined his former teammates and guildmembers to stop Avatar, effectively throwing his undercover persona in the trash. The other Avatar members were understandably upset with Gray’s treachery.
6 Erza Uncovers Mystogan’s True Appearance In Fairy Tail
Erza Scarlet had a long-standing and tumultuous relationship with Jellal Fernandes. They loved each other, but because of life circumstances and all they had been through both together and individually, they couldn’t be together. Jellal and gone his own way, and Erza respected that. However, there was another Jellal.
Mystogan, a member of the Fairy Tail guild, was a version of Jellal from another world, though he was his person with a separate personality and set of experiences. He tried to hide his true appearance from Erza and the rest of Fairy Tail, but he was eventually found out.
5 Gaara & The Sand Siblings Were Undercover Operatives In Naruto
Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro infiltrated the Hidden Leaf Village and Chunin Exam contestants, and while they had every intention of participating in the exams to the fullest extent, their true mission was to help Orochimaru and the Sound Village shinobi destroy the Hidden Leaf.
Of course, the Sand siblings only went along with this because the Hidden Sand Village itself had also been infiltrated by Orochimaru, and they were manipulated into joining an alliance with the Sound ninja. They were caught when Gaara’s demonic transformation began too early and the Sand Village had to attack with the Sound. Eventually, they gave up and later became series heroes.
4 Naruto’s Itachi Uchiha Was Also A Double Agent
Itachi Uchiha was forced between a rock and a hard place when he was told that the only way to stop the Uchiha Clan rebellion from destroying the Hidden Leaf Village was to massacre the clan. He was ordered to do the deed, and he did. Following that, he infiltrated the Akatsuki, a group of villainous rogue ninja.
However, Itachi was never happy about this, and one of the parameters for his doing so was that his little brother, Sasuke, remain safe. On top of that, he traumatized his little brother so that Sasuke would have the drive to hunt Itachi down and avenge their clan.
3 Bleach’s Gin Ichimaru Dies Trying To Stop Aizen
Gin Ichimaru was the most suspicious of the Gotei-13 when the series first started, and a lot of this was due to the fact he was hiding something, not to mention his offputtingly sly smile. However, it turned out that Gin was trying to stop the series villain, Sousuke Aizen.
Aizen was the unsuspecting captain that many overlooked, but he had gained too much power and had a dark secret that only Gin had uncovered. So, Gin pretend to be on Aizen’s side and waited. When his chance finally came, Aizen saw through him and this resulted in Gin’s death.
2 Shiny Chariot Disguised Herself As Professor Ursula In Little Witch Academia
While Professor Ursula, better known to the magical world of Little Witch Academia as Shiny Chariot, was not undercover to infiltrate some dark organization or for some clandestine espionage, she did disguise herself to fool others. In reality, she just wanted her identity as Shiny Chariot to be secret.
However, she had a specific reason for this. She had taken magic from children during her performances, and she did not want any of them to find out. Plus she needed a place to belong that was safe from the public eye. However, her cover was eventually blown due to circumstances surrounding Croix Merides, and her student, Akko, found out.
1 Avatar’s Zuko & Sokka Had Their Cover Blown When They Broke Out Of Boiling Rock
Sokka and Zuko were determined to break into and out of Boiling Rock Prison, one of the Fire Nation’s most secure prisons, to save Sokka’s father and Kyoshi Warrior, Suki. However, as the two dressed up as guards and prisoners, they were met with multiple challenges.
Eventually, the smooth exit plan was thwarted by Azula. Each of their covers was blown as Azula and her friends chased after them. Luckily, Mai and Ty Lee decided to help Zuko and stopped Azula’s pursuit, allowing the team to make a clean getaway.
