Cobra Kai Creators Discuss Who Super-Fan Andrew Garfield Could Play

As Cobra Kai Season 4 approaches, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald suggest the best ways to give the Spider-Man star a theoretical role.

After actor Andrew Garfield revealed himself to be a massive Cobra Kai fan, showrunners Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald spitballed some ideas for bringing him into their world of martial arts.

While talking to Collider, the three creators discussed how Garfield would appear in Cobra Kai, should they ever decide to cast him. “We’re all fans of his. He’s such an amazing, talented actor that you’d want to find something that is surprising,” Hurwitz said. “I think that you’d give him a unique look and a unique feel and unique angle and make him unlike any other character in the show. I think that’s where we’d start. But as to any specifics, I probably shouldn’t say anything because who knows? Maybe he will be on the show and I don’t want to take any chances of ruining that.”

Schlossberg added, “I know in the video Andrew Garfield had mentioned Miyagi-Do forever, so I have a feeling that he’s gonna gravitate towards Daniel LaRusso.” Heald, however, went in the opposite direction and pitched the idea of Garfield playing “a tech billionaire who buys out all the auto sales places in the valley and becomes just the ultimate foil for everybody.”

These ideas from Cobra Kai‘s creators come after Garfield received a shoutout from the stars of the Netflix series, Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Mary Mouser, Peyton List and Jacob Bertrand. In the video, the cast thanked the actor for being such a big fan and congratulated him on his latest film, Tick, Tick,…Boom! “Miyagi-Do for life,” Garfield said in response to the video. “My body feels like Christmas. Forget Season 4, that like, that’s going to keep me going for years.”

Garfield recently starred in Netflix’s Tick, Tick… Boom!, the film adaptation of Rent creator Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical of the same name. In addition, Garfield recently reprised his role as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home after repeatedly denying his role in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film for months. While Spider-Man star Tom Holland has said that No Way Home was Garfield’s way of “making his peace” with Spider-Man, Marvel Studios is reportedly not done with the actor quite yet.

As for Cobra Kai, the Netflix series recently wrapped filming on its fifth season ahead of the Season 4 premiere. Cobra Kai first debuted on YouTube Red in 2018 but, after two seasons, was officially moved to Netflix as an exclusive series. Following The Karate Kid‘s Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso more than thirty years since their All-Valley Karate Tournament match, Cobra Kai sees both men restart Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do with a new generation of students to fight one another, only to end up battling a common enemy in John Kreese. The recent trailer for Season 4 not only teased more melodrama between the adults and students, but also the return of The Karate Kid Part III antagonist Terry Silver.

Cobra Kai Season 4 arrives on Netflix Dec. 31.
