Hawkeye star Vincent D’Onofrio name drops which Marvel heroes he would like to see his character Kingpin battle in the future.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Episode 6 of Hawkeye, “So This Is Christmas?” now streaming on Disney+.
Hawkeye star and Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio recently revealed which Marvel heroes he thinks the crime lord should do battle with in the future.
D’Onofrio revealed his picks when asked if he would like to see Kingpin reunited with Daredevil or take on Spider-Man, telling The Toronto Sun, “There’s three characters that I would want for him to go up against not just two — it’s Punisher, Daredevil and Spider-Man.”
The actor’s response seemed especially fitting as Kingpin is best known as the archenemy of Daredevil in the comics, but was originally a Spider-Man villain. The Wilson Fisk/Kingpin character also has a past with the Punisher.
During the same conversation, D’Onofrio discussed whether he sees his character teaming up with other supervillains in the future, as well as suggested Kingpin could be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next major antagonist. “I’ve never thought about it in those terms before,” the actor explained. “I guess that’s up to [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige] and the writers. Do I think he’s capable of being the guy that’s behind everything? In my mind, he always was … I don’t think we’ve begun to explore how interesting Fisk is.”
Despite D’Onofrio’s suggestions, his future as a villain in the MCU is currently up in the air following the series finale of Hawkeye (“So This Is Christmas?”). While the final moments of the episode appeared to show Kingpin being killed by Maya Lopez/Echo, D’Onofrio believes he is still alive. “I hope he didn’t die,” D’Onofrio revealed after the episode aired. “I’m with the fans, I want to keep playing this part. My hope is that we continue.”
As for the future of Hawkeye on Disney+, director and executive producer Rhys Thomas recently addressed rumors Marvel Studios was discussing a possible second season for the show. “I cannot speak to future plans in the tradition of secrecy. Again, the show coming out, you never know how it’s going to be received and it has been amazing to see how warmly people have taken it and enjoyed it,” Thomas said at the time. “And it’s been great to see [Hailee Steinfeld’s] character embraced and sort of land so firmly in the MCU. I sincerely look forward to where that character goes next. And yes, I loved walking on the streets of the MCU and would gladly enjoy doing it again.”
In the meantime, an Echo spinoff centered on Alaqua Cox’s character is currently being developed. While it’s believed Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld will reprise their roles as Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, respectively, Marvel Studios has yet to confirm their involvement in the project.
All episodes of Hawkeye are currently streaming on Disney+.
