Izumi Miyamura is one of the main characters of the romance anime Horimiya. Initially, he comes off as a gloomy and quiet nerd. He struggles to socialize with other students and has experienced bullying as a result. He also does poorly in school, only cares about graduating, and he generally has low self-esteem.
His life changes when one day Izumi meets Kyouko Hori after bringing home her little brother from school after the little brother gets a nosebleed. With Kyouko, Izumi is able to act more laid-back and carefree. He comes to care deeply about her and starts dating her. To her, Izumi is a good and caring boyfriend who tries to help his girlfriend as much as he can, especially regarding her little brother who she’s responsible for. Fearing that Kyouko might be embarrassed to be seen dating him, Izumi also changes his appearance: he cuts his hair and stops wearing glasses to school. This causes girls to flock to him and start flirting with him. He doesn’t like the attention and instead prefers to be invisible at school, but Izumi puts up with it for Kyouko’s sake. We love seeing Izumi’s personality bloom as he begins dating Kyouko, and being such a kind and caring boyfriend, he is definitely a great pick for our Top 5 Anime Boyfriends of 2021 list.
