Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Felicity Jones still aspires to be like Jyn Erso five years after the film’s release.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor Felicity Jones admitted that five years after the film’s release she still strives to be more like her character Jyn Erso.

“I loved all those aspects of Jyn — her leadership qualities and her instinct for survival and also a sort of inner peace that made her feel ‘what happens, happens,'” Jones revealed in a new interview with StarWars.com. “Many of the attributes we’re needing now with the pandemic we’re going through.”

The actor added that stepping into the role of Jyn actually helped her stand up to real-life bullies, explaining, “I did feel invincible after playing Jyn. I remember some young guy was hassling my elderly neighbor for money at her front door and I intervened to get him to leave her alone. I definitely was channeling a bit of Jyn’s strength in that moment!”

In the same interview, Jones also reflected on learning the Chinese martial art Wushu in order to ensure Jyn looked like a real rebel fighter. “It gave me the physical strength to annihilate stormtroopers,” she recalled. “But also a sense of the mental strength that is so key to martial arts — that your body can be a lethal weapon and you have to use that strength wisely.” She added that she wanted Jyn to look like “she’s been learning to fight her whole life.”

Jones made her debut as Jyn Erso, a human female soldier and former criminal who joined the Alliance to Restore the Republic and played a pivotal role in stealing the Death Star plans. The film ended with Jyn and Captain Cassian Andor being killed by a blast from the Death Star just seconds after transmitting the plans to the Alliance Fleet from a security complex during the Battle of Scariff.

Fans of Rogue One commemorated the fifth anniversary of the film’s release on Dec. 16, with Fandom Managing Editor Eric Goldman tweeting, “Happy 5th Anniversary today to Rogue One. Some call it the best Star Wars movie of the Disney era, but since it’s also a stronger film than any of the prequels, it’s really just the best Star Wars movie since the 1980s. Man, I love it.”

Meanwhile, artist Matt Ferguson added, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is 5 years old today. What a great movie it is. My favourite outside of the original trilogy. Jyn Erso is such a great character, I wish there were more stories about her.”

Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is streaming now on Disney+.
