Director Joe Russo congratulates Spider-Man: No Way Home after the film surpasses Avengers: Infinity War’s opening weekend box office record.

Spider-Man may have just swung past Avengers: Infinity War at the box office, but Infinity War director Joe Russo couldn’t be happier for No Way Home‘s success.

Russo congratulated Spider-Man actor Tom Holland and the No Way Home team on “such a spectacular addition to the [Marvel Cinematic Universe]” after the film surpassed Infinity War‘s opening weekend earnings. Russo shared a video on Instagram of himself and Spider-Man at what appears to be the Avengers Campus attraction in Disneyland, writing, “Breaking all of the records!! This is the closest we can get to hanging out with [Holland] now….”

Infinity War earned $257 million in its opening weekend box office when it was released in 2018. Upon its release this past weekend, No Way Home has officially become the record-holder for the second-highest opening ever at the domestic box office, raking in $260 million from more than 4,000 theaters.

With $50 million earned in Thursday previews, No Way Home was estimated to gross between $150 and $180 million over its opening weekend, putting it on track to have the highest opening of any film released during the pandemic era. Although the film has yet to be released in one of the world’s biggest markets, China, No Way Home‘s opening weekend has so far grossed a total of $600.8 million when including the $340.8 million it earned overseas. Not accounting for inflation, the film now holds the record for the third-largest global opening ever.

This wouldn’t be the first time Spidey has broken a record set by Infinity War, as ticket pre-sales for No Way Home supposedly earned more than $35 million during the first 24 hours of ticket pre-sales alone. As such, No Way Home has become the second-highest pre-selling movie in U.S. history, putting the film above the Star Wars sequel trilogy and just below the $40 million record set by Avengers: Endgame.

Prior to No Way Home‘s release earlier this month, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige expressed his belief that anticipation levels for the film were on par with Endgame thanks in large part to how the rollout of MCU films has been affected by the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. “It’s kept the focus on the projects as they come out, and certainly the anticipation for No Way Home, I would say, is as big as anything we’ve ever felt before,” Feige said.

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters now.
