Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of Darkness just gave readers another glimpse of the best possible version of Rita Repulsa.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of Darkness #1 by Frank Gogol, Simone Ragazzoni, Igor Monti, Sabrina Del Grosso, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.
The Power Rangers are already facing the planet-destroying villains of the Empyreals, and even more dire threats seem to loom on the horizon. However, the heroes of the cosmic Omega Rangers and the Mighty Morphin team back on Earth just got a glimmer of hope from a vision of the distant past. As Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of Darkness revisits Rita Repulsa’s origin, it might even hold the key the Rangers need to defeat Dark Specter: the heroic version of Rita known as the Mystic Mother.
When Rita was just a small child thousands of years earlier, she and her mother Lady Fienna were desperate to escape the clutches of Master Vile and his Tenga Warriors. The villain that had once been Rita’s father had been transformed by the influence of Dark Specter and was transformed into the monstrous Master Vile after so much time spent obsessing over his new lord. After spending so much time studying the Morphin Grid, the couple developed the ability to peer within it directly, and the visions it showed them of their future daughter couldn’t have been further apart.
Where Eldin saw the evil Rita Repulsa, Lady Fienna saw a kind and powerful sorceress clad in white and gold much like herself. Lady Fienna didn’t just see a better version of her daughter, but the most powerful as well, assuming this Mystic Mother is of the same caliber as her small screen counterpart.
Power Rangers Uncovers a New Power Source That Could Reshape the Universe
While Rita Repulsa had been one of the primary antagonists of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ever since the series began, her last TV appearance left a far different impression than her initial appearance. Following the ultimate sacrifice of Zordon to defeat the forces of evil that had plagued him once and for all, Rita disappeared from the franchise for eight years. In 2006, the Power Rangers Mystic Force episode “Mystic Fate” saw Rita return now wearing brilliant white robes and intricate braids, having spent her time away transforming herself into an incomparable force for good.
When the Mystic Force Rangers’ big bad, the demonic Octomus the Master was poised to destroy all good magic in the universe, it was by destroying the Mystic Mother within the Mystic Dimension itself. The battle between them seemingly ended in Rita’s death, though she was revealed to have only barely survived the assault by temporarily converting herself into a being of pure energy and reforming later on. Since then the Mystic Mother has only ever been mentioned in passing, and chances that she will come back to the series are slim. That being said, there is nothing stopping her from showing up in the comics at some point in the future, and she could easily give the Rangers just the edge they need.
The Power Rangers’ Greatest Cosmic Enemy Has FINALLY Arrived in Comics
Rita as the Mystic Mother may not have won her fight against Octomus, but he was always depicted as something possibly even greater than Dark Specter in terms of the Power Rangers primary antagonists. Then again, the Dark Specter of the comics has been revealed to be what is effectively a manifestation of whatever energy is in direct opposition to the Morphin Grid, and as such could very well be considered more of a force of nature than a monster analogous to those the franchise is familiar with.
The fact that Rita isn’t really around in the comics’ present also throws a wrench into the idea that she could show up again, but it doesn’t eradicate the chances of that happening entirely. With a multitude of dimensions to explore, not to mention a plethora of magic abounding, there are plenty of ways that the Mystic Mother could appear in the comics at some point. Even if she doesn’t, the fact that she was glimpsed at all is at least a sign that she hasn’t been forgotten.
