Why DC’s Worst Teen Titans Teamed with the Golden Girls to Kill Darkseid

[ad_1]

Although Teen Titans Go! is the least effective version of the group, their unforgettable team-up with the Golden Girls makes them near unstoppable.

Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans Go! has more than a few quirky characters and zany moments that define the animated series. Based on the superhero team from DC Comics, the show takes place in Jump City from the crime-fighting group’s base of operations, Titans Tower. What sets this version of the Titans apart from other iterations is that they’re bumbling, inane, ineffective and prone to parodic bouts of comedy. Nevertheless, after countless chaotic antics, pranks and random cameos, one of the most out of left field moments on the program is when the ladies of The Golden Girls make their debut.

Three of the four Golden Girls make various cameos in Teen Titans Go!, mainly for comic relief purposes. Regardless of how random the seniors’ appearances are, their fighting skills prove to come in handy. While only briefly mentioned in the Season 2 episode, “Oil Drums,” the Golden Girls make their official arrival in the Titans’ universe in the Season 3 episodes, “Two Parter Part 1” and “Two Parter Part 2.”

When the Titans’ air conditioner at the Tower stops working, the teenage heroes make their way to the fountain outside of the Hall of Justice to cool off. After discovering the Hall is currently empty with no one home, the Titans sneak inside and accidentally set off an alarm, alerting a security robot to their presence. To escape, they hide out in the Justice League’s dressing room and disguise themselves as Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, the Flash and Green Lantern.

At this point, Cyborg uses John Stewart’s magic ring to manifest Dorothy, Rose and Blanche of The Golden Girls fame, explaining, “When the chips are down, you want the Golden Girls in your corner.” Eventually, the security robot discovers the hidden Titans whereabouts, and Cyborg calls for the three green glowing seniors to destroy the robot using their punches, kicks and one mighty swat from a spatula.

Later, after venturing to the planet Apokolips to rescue the Justice League from Darkseid, Robin, still in his Batman costume and taking his imitation of the caped crusader way too seriously, relentlessly annoys Cyborg by repeating the phrase “I’m Batman.” In response to Robin’s hijinks, Cyborg summons the help of Bea Arthur, aka Dorothy, to kick Robin to the ground, so he stops being a pest.

During their battle with Darkseid, Cyborg uses the borrowed ring to call upon the Golden Girls once more, but their magic is thwarted when the supervillain zaps them away by emitting Omega Beams from his eyes. Without the help of his beloved Golden Girls, Cyborg defeats Darkseid on his own by returning fire from his three large Sonic Cannons, blowing him to bits and leaving nothing left but the supervillain’s boots.

The Golden Girls

Teen Titans Go! is known for its random, absurdist humor, but using the Golden Girls as weapons to fend off threats is something nobody ever saw coming. To date, they have appeared or been referenced throughout the series a surprising total of six times. Be that as it may, this isn’t the only instance of a comic book character loving The Golden Girls.

In the first Deadpool movie, Wade Wilson enthusiastically sports a t-shirt with Bea Arthur on the front. In Deadpool 2, he engraves each of his katanas with her first and last name. The character’s fanaticism for the actor extends to the comic universe, too, where he frequently watches reruns of The Golden Girls and proclaims himself as Bea Arthur’s number one fan. He even goes so far as to name the Deadpool Corps’ spaceship after her.

As it happens, Deadpool’s obsession with The Golden Girl has been an ongoing gag in the comics since 2004, when Fabian Nicieza wrote for Deadpool & Cable. Wade Wilson even hallucinates an image of Bea Arthur in front of him, fondly calling her “an angel of God.” Hilariously, it appears as though both Teen Titans Go!‘s Cyborg and Marvel’s Deadpool hold a place in their hearts for the fabulous ladies of The Golden Girls, with both heroes considering Dorothy and the gang to be a pal and a confidant, respectively.
