WARNING: The following contains spoilers for “Rick Grimes 2000,” in Skybound X #1 from Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Rus Wooton and Dave McCaig, on sale now.
In The Walking Dead #75, Rick Grimes losing his mind at Alexandria. He was paranoid, angry and acted out with extreme violence against Pete in the safe zone for being abusive to his wife, Jessie, and their kid. That issue ended with Michonne knocking him out so they could calm him down, however, that issue had a back-up story where Rick disappeared right after, getting abducted by aliens.
In the issue, Rick woke up, got a super-powered suit and came back down to Earth to see a full-scale cosmic alien nvasion happening alongside the zombie apocalypse. And now, “Rick Grimes 2000” in Skybound X #1, offers more insight into the sadistic, gory alternate reality Rick is dropped into.
Rick finds himself entrenched in an intergalactic war, with aliens overrunning the planet and his allies turned into super-soldiers. Tyreese, Axel and even the Governor’s henchman, Martinez, are all superheroes now in this new apocalypse. However, some colleagues don’t make it out with human versions of Glenn losing his heart and Dale getting beheaded.
It leaves Rick frantic and looking for Carl as he traverses the blood and guts, looking like he’s straight out the Invincible series. As he asks to be filled in amid the chaos, a lightsaber is plunged through the head of a zombie to reveal Michonne as a Jedi-like superhero now. She confesses their alien overlords started the spread of the virus, bringing the undead back to life to start mankind’s downfall.
With the Earth on the brink of collapse, the aliens are turning Earth’s best warriors into super-soldiers to help them harvest water — the universe’s ultimate currency. However, some villains such as the Governor sides with their alien bosses, opting not to join the resistance. Rick’s nemesis then makes his appearance here by ripping off Michonne’s skull, shocking Rick by revealing he’s also got Lori by his side.
While that was the end of the original back-up, the story continues here. Rick realizes it’s worse than he thought as some people aren’t just physical slaves, but mental ones too. He attacks the Governor using his retractable arm, grabbing Michonne’s lightsaber and then amputating the villain’s hand. Sadly, Lori’s arm turns into a cannon akin to DC’s Cyborg, and she holds it to Rick’s head, begging him to align with them or face the consequences.
This short ends with Rick in tears as he sees once more that people will do anything out of fear to survive. Lori’s compromising herself, although this could be due in large part to the aliens’ modifications or the Governor’s conditioning. And with Carl and so many others missing, this strange, violent world is more dangerous, horrific and emotionally traumatizing world than the world of the zombie outbreak. To make matters worse, Rick doesn’t know who he can still trust or even who might reappear in his life. While he always wanted Lori back after the Governor killed her, this new, unforgiving world where his loved ones can betray him at the drop of a hat is not what he had in mind.
