Let’s dive into Young Justice: Phantoms and how the show’s deadliest alliance has been formed to combat the newest mystical threat.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the first 10 episodes of Young Justice: Phantoms, streaming now on HBO Max.
As Young Justice: Phantoms proceeds, the focus has shifted from Superboy’s death and the race war on Mars, to Cheshire and Artemis’ battle with Lady Shiva, and now to the mystical fate of the world. A new Lord of Chaos, the Child, has descended with all the other lords’ powers combined to kill Klarion and raze the planet, but Zatanna and her charges have found themselves pushing back. Now, in “Nomed Esir!” we discover the show’s deadliest alliance may have been formed to combat this threat, and it’s one that’ll surely have a lot of infighting.
Zatanna and her proteges tried hard to fight the Child previously, but like the Witch Boy, they got floored. The heroes then got approached by the Phantom Stranger, but sadly, a short-sighted Zatanna posited that if both evil lords fought each other, that may benefit the heroes as they’d take one another out.
However, the Stranger educated her, making it clear the Child needed to be stopped or else it’d be apocalyptic once she got through with her ‘brother.’ Zatanna realizes this after she got thrown into the battlefield on Roanoke Island, seeing what the Stranger was talking about all along.
But luckily, a pact was made that brought Etrigan the Demon to the fold and he started battling Child as well. Still, the tyrant proved too much and they barely escaped with their lives, but now, as the Stranger warned, they need to think differently in terms of strategy. He then tells Zatanna she needs to partner with Klarion, who’s one of her most sinister enemies in this series.
Klarion wreaked havoc on her, the Young Justice squad under Nightwing, as well as senior Justice League members when he was with the Light. But despite that checkered past, Klarion’s power will be needed as Zatanna’s crew isn’t strong enough. He understands Child a lot too, along with the other lords, so it’d make sense to work with him as he can aid in tactics. The Stranger admitted desperate times calls for desperate measures, after all, leaving Zatanna displaying an air of wariness regarding him too as he’s all about manipulating destiny and duplicitous control.
Ultimately, it’s truly unsettling as she knows Klarion will try to backstab them and take over as soon as Child’s banished or killed. He could even usurp her power and take it for himself, but without Doctor Fate or the other magical heroes joining ranks, it’s a gamble Zatanna must take. Time’s running out, solutions are needed, and a deal with Klarion — someone the Child wouldn’t ever expect her to ally with — could be the unpredictable wildcard and ace in the hole that delivers victory.
See how Zatanna’s need for a deadly alliance surfaces in Young Justice: Phantoms. The first 10 episodes are streaming now on HBO Max.
