Following Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s bombshell ending, one theory suggests that Venom remembers dying in Sam Raimi’s universe.
One of the most shocking aspects of Venom: Let There Be Carnage came in the post-credits scene when Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and Venom saw Tom Holland’s Spider-Man unmasked on television. This was likely made possible due to the multiverse being broken open by the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Strange and Peter Parker. Interestingly, Venom expressed anger over seeing who was under the webhead’s mask. It was a bit odd, as this Venom hadn’t ever met Peter or even known of the teen’s existence, but one theory suggests he hates him because of what happened in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
The Reddit theory from eldritchBat claims that Venom recognizes Peter’s name, but not the face, because of the symbiote hive mind. In this very scene, Venom tells Eddie they’re part of one giant consciousness that has gathered knowledge for over 80 billion years and across universes. Thus, they can share information.
Now, given that in Spider-Man: No Way Home, most of the villains brought into the MCU died in their respective universes, such as Raimi’s Green Goblin and Doc Ock, it stands to reason a wave of death could indeed connect folks being strung together due to the breach. As such, Venom may have tapped into what happened to Topher Grace’s Eddie and that symbiote at the end of Spider-Man 3, where Tobey Maguire’s Spidey used a Goblin bomb to blow the alien and Eddie up.
This may well be why Venom now has that reaction as he watches J. Jonah Jameson out Peter on the Daily Bugle video. He’s pissed because he recalls how Peter duped that Eddie, embarrassed him on and off the job, got the girl in Gwen Stacy and simply made the symbiote’s host look like a joke. In addition, Venom would be hurting knowing that both his ‘partners’ got disintegrated by the webhead.
Seeing as the symbiotes share this connection across universes, it perfectly builds to Venom now wanting to embark on a bloody vendetta to gain revenge for his ‘kin.’ Admittedly, this new Venom’s more heroic while Raimi’s Venom was much more sinister so if this theory holds up, it remains to be seen if Eddie will consider Holland’s Peter, a teen to say the least, as the enemy. He hasn’t been of the view that Spidey’s a menace in his reporting job in San Francisco per se, so Venom could corrupt him or try to find a new vessel to seek revenge. Or perhaps Venom’s memories have been warped by the breach and he truly believes Spidey is the evil one that killed Grace’s ‘heroic’ symbiote, which could paint an even more emotional dynamic between him and Hardy’s Eddie.
It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds, especially as Venom licking the TV screen indicates he wants to eat Peter’s head, no matter what. Admittedly, fans don’t yet know where or when Peter will be by the time No Way Home ends, but it seems like Sony may be angling for their characters, such as Morbius and more of their cadre of villains past, to go up against the MCU’s wall-crawler. But what’s for sure is fans are chomping at the bit to see this new Venom leading the chase, driven by the thought of vengeance and possibly shifting his moral compass once more to something much more personal as opposed to seeking out true justice.
