Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige suggest that Spider-Man: No Way Home will finally bring an iconic Spider-Man line to the MCU.
WARNING: The following article contains possible minor spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home, in theaters Dec. 17.
It looks as though Spider-Man fans will at long last be able to hear one of the hero’s most iconic lines spoken in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Spider-Man: No Way Home releases later this month.
During an interview with IGN, producer Amy Pascal was asked about the possibility of hearing the “With great power comes great responsibility” line in No Way Home or any subsequent Spider-Man film. Pascal was coy in her reply, saying, “[Audiences] will have to come see the movie.” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige then jumped in, adding, “How long you’re going to have to wait, we’ll see,” though Pascal assured fans the wait is “not too long.”
The iconic line first appeared in a narration caption at the end of Spider-Man’s debut in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15. The line has since become attributed to Peter Parker’s late Uncle Ben following the popularity of its utterance in Sam Raimi’s 2002 live-action Spider-Man film when Ben (Cliff Robertson) says it to Peter (Tobey Maguire) during their last conversation together. With the line having been featured in both the original and the Amazing Spider-Man films, the MCU’s Web-Slinger remains the only live-action interpretation of the character not to have had the famous line spoken.
As such, considering a variant of the line was said by Tom Holland’s Peter in Captain America: Civil War, it’s possible No Way Home may finally offer some insight into the MCU version of Uncle Ben if the line is indeed spoken in the upcoming film. Alternatively, the line — as well as more details on Spider-Man’s MCU origin story — may instead be saved for the recently announced Disney+ animated series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year. So far, however, the closest reference to Uncle Ben MCU fans have received has been the initials “BFP” (Benjamin Franklin Parker) spotted on Peter’s old suitcase in Far From Home and a reference to some sort of heartache Aunt May suffered back in Homecoming.
While “With great power comes great responsibility” and Uncle Ben may or may not show up in No Way Home, there are a number of other iconic Spider-Man characters who have been confirmed for the Wall-Crawler’s third MCU film. Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina will be reprising their roles as Green Goblin and Doc Ock, respectively, while Jamie Foxx will be returning as Electro. Contributing even more to No Way Home‘s already impressive hype levels, Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have both been rumored to suit up as well.
Outside of Doctor Strange accessing the multiverse to help restore Spider-Man’s secret identity, not a lot is currently known about the film’s plot, though fans can expect it to pick up the story immediately following the events of Far From Home. “What’s cool about this film is it picks up right after the second one finishes,” Holland said during an interview with Graham Norton. “So the second one finishes with a freeze-frame of Spider-Man, the third one starts with the same freeze-frame.”
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on Dec. 17.
