The Hawkeyes are archers, mercenaries, and brazenly human heroes counted among the ranks of the Avengers. Their lack of any discernible superpower underlines what makes Clint Barton and Kate Bishop so adored by their readers: the strengths and weaknesses accompanying being “just” a human are ignored with resolve rivaling that of Thanos.
Kate Bishop, recently brought to life in Hawkeye by Hailee Steinfeld, is a particularly bold character who consistently outshines her partner/predecessor. Her feats on any Earth have placed her among the fiercest archers in the multiverse. The foes who have fallen are as varied as they are powerful, demonstrating why the Young Avengers listened when she talked her way onto the team.
10 Lady Katherine Escapes The Punisher (Of Earth-311)
Secret Wars Journal #1 explores Earth-311, a reality where familiar heroes receive 17th-century makeovers. This theme gives readers a villainous Frank Castle, named the Punisher Sheriff, in pursuit of Lady Katherine Bishop. She tries to steal from him, but walks into a trap set by the Sheriff. In the end, Lady Katherine’s accomplices escape punishment thanks to a distraction orchestrated by her. She even manages to bust out of her captivity alongside the time-traveling Miss America, solidifying her victory over the Punisher Sheriff’s spiteful harassment.
9 Kate Knocks Out Madame Masque
Writer Matt Fraction has left quite a mark on the Hawkeye mythos, revitalizing the character and affirming his inclusion among Earth’s Mightiest. Fraction also clearly enjoys the attitude and skill of Kate Bishop: capable of rescuing Clint Barton but with a slight edge of recklessness… or fearlessness, depending on the reader. A particularly bold move occurs in Hawkeye #4, where Kate incapacitated and impersonates Madame Masque at an auction in order to purchase video evidence of Clint assassinating a dictator. The tape turns out to be bogus, but Kate’s decisive action keeps Masque at bay and unravels the truth.
8 Kate Puts Out Firebrand
Following the events of “Civil War,” Captain America lies dead and the nation is reeling from the tragedy. Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America sees Clint Barton take up the Stars & Stripes, but the Hawkeye mantle remains active thanks to Kate.
The Young Avenger continues to defy the Superhuman Registration Act, pursuing the blazing Firebrand. She receives assistance from her fellow YA Patriot and, equipping a water arrow, extinguishing the villain’s flames.
7 Kate Immobilizes Old Man Logan
The grizzled, decrepit version of Wolverine first gained prominence in Mark Millar’s post-apocalyptic tale, “Old Man Logan.” The character soon enters the Prime Marvel Universe (Earth-616) and comes face to face with his old pal Hawkeye’s successor in Old Man Logan #3. The confrontation is brief: Kate immobilizes him with a tranquilizer arrow, remarking how much it takes to knock the gray mutant out. However, the moment holds special significance owing to Clint Barton’s role in the original story. A subtle tribute to Logan’s sidekick from that hopeless future.
6 Kate & Clint Bring Down SHIELD (Earth-15928)
A turn of events echoing that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, SHIELD becomes the enemy of the archer heroes in All-New Hawkeye. Primarily responsible for experimentation associated with Project Communion, the organization killed thousands of Chinese citizens via an explosion. This storyline sees Clint and Kate reuniting after 30 years to finally put an end to the program by attacking SHIELD, itself. With innumerable resources and skilled defenders at the shady institution, it’s remarkable that Clint and Kate manage to bring them down.
5 Kate Uses An EMP Arrow To Disable Iron Man
Returning to Fallen Son, Hawkeye and Patriot are met by Iron Man and Clint Barton following the former duo’s defeat of Firebrand. Clint, dawning the suit of Captain America, allows Tony the lead, but this proves ineffective: Iron Man can hardly get the first words out of his mouth before he’s disabled by an EMP arrow courtesy of Kate.
Though not a full-fledged fight, the instance does highlight the capabilities Hawkeye has at her disposal. Iron Man arrives and doesn’t want to talk, so he is promptly grounded by Kate’s EMP arrow.
4 Kate Helps Defeat A Thor Clone (Earth-10208)
What If? Civil War #1 proves an inspiring yet tragic alternative to the events of the main universe; inspiring in its events, tragic for its failure to come to pass on Earth-616. In these surrogate proceedings, the heroes put aside their differences and come to a truce after cooperating to defeat Clone Thor. Kate is among the heroes at that seminal fight, letting off arrows as she dodges the impostor’s lighting. Heroics are analogous with Hawkeye and this multiversal development showcases her gallantry once more.
3 Kate Technically Beats Doctor Doom (Earth-18366)
As a part of the heroes’ side in the Doom World War, Kate Barton technically defeats Doctor Doom twice. All-New Wolverine #33-35 has the heroes win the war, but many are imprisoned by the ruler of Latveria subsequent to his defeat. The likes of Thor, Rocket Raccoon, Daredevil, Spider-Man, and more are freed by Kate and Gabby Kinney, who had accompanied her into Doom’s base. The ragtag bunch of do-gooders escapes while Laura Kinney, aka Old Woman Laura, finishes off the mad ruler. Overcoming Doom in the war and post-war lends Kate credibility in the realm of proficiency.
2 Kate Plays A Vital Role Against Mother
An unsettling interdimensional parasite, Mother is an early foe of the Young Avengers appearing in their titular run in 2013. The villain assumes the likeness of parents from different families with the intent to feed on the children.
Even enthralling the mainline Avengers, Mother proves a sinister adversary to Kate and her team; however, they are successful in exiling Mother forever with significant assistance from team member Wiccan. A skilled archer banishing a parasite capable of traversing dimensions, let alone rescuing the senior Avengers, are superb deeds worthy of a lauding public.
1 Kate & The Young Avengers Take Down Kang The Conqueror
The forthcoming MCU baddie Kang the Conqueror faces the blossoming young team in Young Avengers #4-5. Alongside the ambitious Patriot, Kate impairs Kang’s armor with a precision shot to his chest. Kate confronts Nathaniel Richards by herself following the villain’s subduing of her comrade. It eventually takes the entire team to bring the Conqueror down, but Kate supplies the bravery, as well as the literal sword, that wins the day.
