Alec Baldwin Says He ‘Didn’t Pull the Trigger’ in Fatal Rust Shooting Accident

Alec Baldwin tells George Stephanopoulos he didn’t pull the trigger on the gun that killed Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Alec Baldwin claims in a new interview that he “didn’t pull the trigger” of the gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the New Mexico set of Joel Souza’s Rust.

“Well, the trigger wasn’t pulled. I didn’t pull the trigger,” the actor tells journalist George Stephanopoulos in a clip from an upcoming interview shared by ABC News. “I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them, never … Someone put a live bullet in a gun, a bullet that wasn’t even supposed to be on the property.”

In another moment during the interview, Baldwin explains he’s been thinking a lot about how things could have gone differently. “I think back and I think of what could I have done?” he explains. “She was someone who was loved by everyone who worked with [her] and liked by everyone who worked with [her], and admired… I mean, even now I find it hard to believe that [she’s gone]. It doesn’t seem real to me.”

It was previously reported Hutchins died from being accidentally shot in the chest after Baldwin allegedly fired a gun containing a live round. It was revealed at that time the film’s assistant director had told Baldwin, “Cold Gun!,” which is often used as a code word on film sets to confirm the prop gun is safe to use. Following the incident, Baldwin issued a statement on social media saying he was “fully cooperating with the police investigation.” Hutchins was 42.

While the investigation is ongoing, it was revealed shortly after Hutchins’ death that half a dozen crew members left the Rust film set just hours before the accidental shooting in protest of poor working conditions. Among the complaints was “a lack of safety meetings” on the film’s set, which resulted in at least three other misfires during filming.

In the wake of Hutchins’ death, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke vowed to never use “guns with blanks” in any of his projects moving forward. “Someone hurt or killed on my set is my worst nightmare. Sending love to Halyna Hutchins’ family, @JensenAckles, cast & crew of ‘Rust.’ I’m so sorry,” Kripke tweeted at the time. “In her memory, a simple, easy pledge: no more guns with blanks on any of my sets ever. We’ll use VFX muzzle flashes. Who’s with me?”

Produced by George Stephanopoulos Productions, Alec Baldwin Unscripted will air as a one-hour primetime special event on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 8 p.m. on ABC. The special will also stream on Hulu later that evening.
