The JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series does not hesitate to kill important characters. Whether hero, villain, or even the main protagonist, no one is safe from dying when the story calls for it. This was a phenomenon demonstrated as early as Phantom Blood and continues to this day.
However, there were many casualties that easily could have been avoided, should the battle have been fought more intelligently. By identifying them, we can better appreciate how things could have gone very differently, should certain individuals have acted with intelligence, decisiveness, and when necessary, diplomacy.
10 Jonathan Joestar’s Honeymoon Played Directly Into Dio’s Hands
When enjoying a romantic honeymoon cruise with Erina, Jonathan noticed one of Dio’s henchmen and immediately went to apprehend him. However, his adoptive brother was lying in wait and immediately struck out at his neck.
This disrupted Jonathan’s breathing, which prevented him from using Hamon to defend himself. If he stayed behind and requested backup from the ship’s security, he might have been able to prevent the boat from burning down altogether. Moreover, he would have saved his descendants from an unspeakable amount of grief and pain.
9 Shigechi Wasted His Chance To Kill Yoshikage Kira
When Shigechi first encountered Yoshikage Kira, he was in a position to kill him. The serial killer was smothered from head to toe by the Harvest Stand, and its drills were perfectly poised to burrow through his neck.
Since Shigechi hesitated, Kira exploited an opportunity to destroy most of his assailant’s body with a deadly explosive attack. This immediately freed him from Harvest’s grasp and allowed him to turn the battle in his favor. Ultimately, Shigechi would never get another chance to correct his mistake and got killed seconds before reaching out to Josuke.
8 Caesar Could Have Survived Against Wamuu If He Waited For Backup
After learning that the Pillar Men were frighteningly close, Caesar Zeppeli wanted to press the attack. Ignoring the warnings of Joseph and Lisa Lisa, he confronted Wamuu alone and would have killed him if not for a small oversight.
Should Caesar simply have waited to confront the villain with his comrades, it’s likely that he could have made it out of Battle Tendency in one piece. His death was even more unnecessary when considering that Joseph was in no hurry to take Wamuu’s antidote.
7 DIO Could Have Killed The Crusaders If He Stopped Gloating
DIO would have been able to massacre the Crusaders if he took them seriously from the beginning. Vanilla Ice had a good start against Avdol and Iggy, though DIO’s god complex proved to be debilitating. For example, he encountered Polnareff while he was isolated from the other heroes but wasted his chance by toying with him instead of killing him outright.
If DIO had killed Polnareff, Polnareff wouldn’t have been able to ambush him later during his fight against Jotaro. Therefore, DIO’s pride was ultimately his downfall, regardless of whether or not Star Platinum was a stronger Stand than The World.
6 Kars Could Have Killed Joseph If He Baited Him Properly
After becoming the ultimate life form, Kars had a palpable advantage over Joseph. Now able to resist and use Hamon, he was resilient against virtually everything the young man threw at him.
However, Kars was so confident in his indestructible new body that he never considered that Joseph might try punching him into space. Should he have kept his wits when finishing the fight, he never would have suffered one of the most brutal endings in the series’ history.
5 Risotto Could Have Joined Forces With Bucciarati’s Team
Despite the combined efforts of Doppio and Diavolo, it seemed as if Risotto would reign victorious in the battle by the shore. However, the La Squadra leader did not expect to be gunned down by Narancia’s Stand, which was deployed to scout the area.
Should the villain have joined forces with Bucciarati’s team beforehand, they could have invested their efforts in toppling a common enemy before turning their attention toward each other. Risotto’s oversight and lack of diplomacy cost his entire team their lives.
4 Avdol Could Have Survived If Polnareff Was More Careful
There were a number of ways Avdol could have survived the treacherous expedition into DIO’s manor. If Polnareff was more careful with his surroundings, Avdol never would have needed to thrust his body in Cream’s path to begin with.
Moreover, Avdol could have simply let Polnareff die, since it would have been the second time he saved him. Since Magician’s Red is much better equipped to fight Vanilla Ice than Silver Chariot, it would have been a tactical decision that increased the Crusaders’ chances of victory.
3 Bucciarati Could Have Defeated Diavolo If He Sent Fugo To Deliver Trish Instead
Bucciarati could have avoided being killed in the battle against Diavolo if he sent Fugo to hand over Trish. Since Purple Haze infects its targets immediately, Diavolo would only accelerate its effects through erasing time with his Stand.
The only difficulty behind this plan is getting Fugo on board with betraying the Boss. Given Bucciarati’s background as a hardened criminal, however, it wouldn’t be particularly difficult to deceive him (especially if he manipulated his protective feelings for Narancia).
2 Yoshihiro Kira Could Have Survived If His Son Was More Intelligent
At first, Yoshihiro used his proximity to Josuke in order to coordinate Kira’s explosive bombs. After the hero discovered what was happening, he seized the phone and used it to redirect Stray Cat’s projectiles at him instead.
Unfortunately for Yoshihiro, Kira wasn’t intelligent enough to distinguish Josuke’s impersonation from that of his own father. Should the murderer have been slightly more perceptive – or if his view of the house wasn’t entirely obscured – he would have been able to avoid killing one of the few allies he had left.
1 Yoshikage Kira Wasted A Perfect Scenario By Giving Himself Up To Hayato
Yoshikage Kira’s Stand ability made it impossible for Hayato to tell anyone about his identity. Whoever learned it would explode from the inside out, which made stopping him virtually impossible.
Eventually, Kira became so overconfident and complacent with his power that he admitted his identity in public. Since Hayato summoned Josuke and Okuyasu beforehand, Kira’s spell was broken, and he was forced into a battle he knew that he could not win. Like DIO and Kars before him, his pride was ultimately his downfall.
