Tony Stark is a billionaire philanthropist, genius engineer, playboy, and the superhero Iron Man – a founding member of The Avengers. He’s regarded as one of the most successful people in the Marvel Universe, but that doesn’t mean he’s succeeded at everything he’s tried.
Stark has come up short multiple times. He’s often found himself dealing with powerful enemies he’s struggled to defeat, whether that’s because they’re as rich as him or they’re more powerful than him. And in his decades-long career as a hero, there have been times where Stark’s solutions only caused more problems.
10 Stark Allowed His Work To Be Used By Enemy Forces And Was Unable To Save Professor Ho Yinsen
Tony Stark’s first failure involved him traveling to another country to visit one of his factories. Not content as a regular playboy and super-scientist, he had to see how well his weapons were working for the U.S. Government. They worked great… on him. And as a result, he created the Iron Man armor.
Before he became a superhero, Stark spent years trying to make up for his actions. Although letting the U.S. Government take his weapons led to him creating Iron Man, before he went from business owner to superhero, he needed Yinsen’s help to hold off the soldiers long enough for him to put on the armor and power up.
9 Revealing His Secret Identity
One of Tony’s worst decisions was revealing his secret identity to the rest of the world. By then, he was operating as Iron Man for almost two decades, but going public made it more difficult to run his company. It also put an even larger target on his back. Stark had no separation between his normal life and his superhero life, which is great for people who want to read high-octane fights all the time, but not so great for readers who want a balance of action and drama.
8 Going Out Of Control During The Armor Wars
When Obadiah Stane took over Tony Stark’s company, some of Tony Stark’s top-secret designs for Iron Man armors were leaked. When Tony found out, he spent weeks hunting down every single person wearing his designs – whether they were good or evil – and erased them all. It was an understandable and even responsible act from Stark, but it caused him more problems than it solved.
In the end, Stark went after Captain America and the United States government. The government was so frustrated by his actions that they commissioned Firepower, who tried to destroy Iron Man in one on one combat.
7 Allowing His Company To Be Taken Over
During the 80s, the Iron Man writers decided to give Tony Stark an alcohol addiction. His over-reliance on drinking was a way to cope with being Iron Man and Tony Stark. As a result, he became a pretty terrible drunk. In one issue, he even yelled at Jarvis for offering him some help, which resulted in Jarvis selling his shares in Stark Industries, meaning S.H.I.E.L.D owned half the company for a while. However, Stark eventually managed to blackmail S.H.I.E.L.D into giving him his company back.
6 Being Hacked By Justin Hammer And Killing A Foreign Dignitary
While Tony Stark was losing himself to alcohol, he had another problem to deal with. Justin Hammer was a new enemy and business rival to Tony Stark. Hoping to take Stark Industries down, Hammer began hacking into Iron Man’s armor and controlling it. At first, he did simple things like making the light on Stark’s chest flash. But as he let these seemingly innocuous issues go on for too long, Hammer managed to use Iron Man to kill a foreign dignitary.
5 Choosing To Work With S.H.I.E.L.D Over The Heroes During The Civil War
When the Superhuman Registration Act was first introduced, every hero had to make a choice. Tony Stark made the wrong one. After years of having problems with the government – whether it was because of his actions as a hero or the fact he didn’t want to give up his weapons to SHIELD – he believed that things would be different if he was in charge. Instead, his attempt to force everyone to sign up for the SHRA left everyone in a weaker position. It was a mistake that tore the superhero community apart and caused more problems than it solved when new threats arrived to attack Earth.
4 Choosing To Work With The Illuminati Over Captain America
Another mistake Stark made was working with the Illuminati. His goal was to find a way to stave off the destruction of everything, and in the process, he and the others created powerful, universe-destroying weapons. However, he had too much integrity to use them until he was inverted during AXIS.
Stark protected himself from being restored to normal and spent the next few months on the run from the Avengers. He refused to change his mind about his actions and, in the end, fought with Captain America instead of saving himself as the universe came to an end.
3 Working With The Illuminati To Kick Hulk Off The Planet
In general, the Illuminati is one of the biggest failures of The Avenger’s career. A bunch of super-smart dudes got together thinking they could decide the fate of everything? Whatever could go wrong? After seeing the Hulk lay waste to a city, The Avengers decided to toss Banner onto a ship and chuck him out into space. Their plan was to put him on a planet where he’d be able to live in peace – keeping Earth safe at the same time. However, what actually happened was he became the gladiator king of a planet, saw it destroyed, and then came back to Earth looking for revenge.
2 Allowing Himself To Be Hacked By The Skrull
After years of carefully guarding the secrets of Stark Enterprises, Tony did a complete 180 as he became the most powerful man in America. Once he was given control of S.H.I.E.L.D, he put Stark tech in everything he felt needed it. Suddenly, several important organizations relied on Stark’s technology to operate, which made him a target when Earth was attacked. Dum Dum Dugan destroyed S.W.O.R.D headquarters, and a Skrull version of Jarvis uploaded a virus into the Stark mainframe, causing Iron Man’s armor to malfunction and infecting all Stark tech on Earth – including the defense systems connected to S.H.I.E.L.D.
1 Allowing Norman Osborn To Take S.H.I.E.L.D And Turn It Into HAMMER
By far the biggest failure of Iron Man involved letting Norman Osborn take over S.H.I.E.L.D. Because he wasn’t able to take down the Skrulls when it mattered, Norman Osborn killed Queen Veranke instead. Eventually, this gave Osborn all the political clout he needed to take over S.H.I.E.L.D and turn it into HAMMER. With this new power, Osborn took a version of Stark’s armor and turned himself into the Iron Patriot. He was also able to create his own version of The Avengers.
