Attack on Titan is a cautionary tale against the slippery slope of fascism—it reveals how a subjugated group of people might end up using the same violent means as their oppressors. Most characters in the story are either from Paradis or Marley, two nations that have been sworn enemies for thousands of years.
As such, it is completely understandable why it is extremely difficult for either party to let go of their cultural hatred for the other. Despite the ethical ambiguities that plague their world, several characters staunchly believe that they’re fighting for justice, just as there are those who are aware that any freedom gained would come at an incalculable moral expense.
10 Believe They’re Right: Kitz Woermann Would Rather Die Than Yield To Common Sense
Kitz Woermann leads the Elite Forces First Division with an iron fist, although his insistence on protocol often spills over into paranoia. Pyxis notes that Woermann’s behavior is unbecoming of a military captain, particularly when he rejects Eren’s Attack Titan explanation and almost has the latter executed.
Armin attempts to speak on his friend’s behalf, even suggesting that the Attack Titan might prove helpful, but Kitz Woermann would rather go to his grave than allow common sense to affect him. He thinks he knows everything; the truth is the exact opposite.
9 Know They’re Wrong: Grisha Jaeger Understands The Risks That Come With Eren Acquiring The Attack Titan
Grisha Jaeger used to behave like he was invincible until his sister’s murder transforms his stubbornness into dogged perseverance. As an adult, he rarely exhibits any degree of mindfulness, but the fact is that he accepts the responsibility thrust upon him and fulfills his mission (to a point).
Grisha is painfully aware of the risks that come with his son acquiring the Attack Titan, but he does it because the older Eren manipulates him into doing so through the timeless Paths.
8 Believe They’re Right: Dot Pyxis Does The Job He’s Expected To Do
Dot Pyxis is many things—cheerful, intelligent, unconventional—but he is, more than anything else, filled with certainty when it comes to his job.
While his role in the overarching storyline is negligible, his decisions are grounded in logic, a far cry from the frivolous delusions that plague most of his colleagues, superiors, and subordinates. Pyxis doesn’t know everything about the Nine Titans, nor does he care about ancient history: he does what he’s expected to do without fail.
7 Know They’re Wrong: Keith Shadis Is Painfully Aware Of His Many Limitations
Keith Shadis initially believes that he’s a cut above the rest, glibly implying that he has an important role to play. His self-esteem takes a serious hit along with his career as the Scout Regiment Commander, which is why he decides to become a military commandant.
As much as he pretends that his journey has meaning, Shadis knows that he isn’t half as talented or interesting as he portrays himself. He doesn’t do much to fix his mistakes until the very end, but at least he doesn’t deny them (to himself).
6 Believe They’re Right: Zeke Jaeger Commits To His Eldian Euthanasia Plan
Zeke’s hope for a brighter future is destroyed only after Eren wrests control of the Founding Titan and enacts the Rumbling. However, until that fateful moment, Zeke remains thoroughly dedicated to his mission, both physically and philosophically.
He insists that rendering every living Eldian sterile is the only way to ease the conflict between them and the rest of the world. Zeke exerts every ounce of mental energy to ensure the success of his Eldian Euthanasia plan, such is the strength of his self-confidence.
5 Know They’re Wrong: Eren Kruger Hurts His Own People For The Greater Good
Eren Kruger plays the part of Marleyan sympathizer in order to exact his ultimate goal: the freedom of the Eldian peoples. He causes irreparable damage to innocent lives and families over the course of his career, all the while experiencing intense guilt for the horrors he puts his own kin through.
However, Kruger would happily repeat his crimes over and over again because he considers them necessary for Eldian survival, no matter how morally wrong they might be on a personal scale.
4 Believe They’re Right: Gabi Braun’s Brainwashing Leads Her To Commit Atrocities
Gabi takes way too long to realize the extent of her brainwashing, although it’s quite fortunate that she succeeds. Her early life, on the other hand, is spent in a cloud of hatred and anger towards the Eldians of Paradis, blaming all the ills of the world on the people she aggressively refers to as “Island Devils.”
Gabi’s conviction in the veracity of Marleyan propaganda leads her to murder Sasha Braus and violently attack anyone who goes against her preconceived notions.
3 Know They’re Wrong: Ymir Fritz Is Trapped In A Sea Of Her Own Mistakes
Ymir’s life is a paradox—she starts with nothing, but eventually accrues enough power to reshape history itself. Unfortunately, she is bound to the will of King Fritz, obeying his commands without questioning his vile motives.
Ymir remains trapped in a dimension composed of her own consciousness and the Power of the Titans, where she continues to mindlessly serve her Founding Titan successors. Nevertheless, Ymir understands exactly how much change she has indirectly wrought on the world, even if she deems herself powerless to resist.
2 Believe They’re Right: Eren Jaeger Isn’t Swayed By Anyone Else’s Opinions
Eren’s lack of self-doubt doesn’t translate into confidence as much as arrogance. He behaves as if he’s the only human being to have ever experienced suffering, treating other people like NPCs in his bloodcurdling vision for posterity.
Eren isn’t swayed by countering opinions, not even during the story’s climax; instead, he lays the burden of stopping his rampage on his friends and allies. That being said, Eren is at least subconsciously aware of his lapses in judgment, but that doesn’t really change anything for everyone else.
1 Know They’re Wrong: Armin Arlert Remembers The Consequences Of His Actions
Armin was born mature, but he truly comes into his own after the Scout Regiment begins to appreciate him for his vast array of talents. He is humble and kind, not to mention his exceptionally analytical mind that consistently produces spectacular results.
While Armin willingly performs his duties, he never forgets that his actions have led to countless deaths, most of which could have been prevented if Eren had understood the value of diplomacy.
