Venom: Let There Be Carnage writer Kelly Marcel reveals how involved Eddie Brock/Venom actor Tom Hardy was in developing the story for the sequel.
Writer Kelly Marcel discussed how involved Venom: Let There Be Carnage star Tom Hardy was in developing the story for the Sony Pictures film.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, Marcel — who also wrote 2018’s Venom — confirmed Hardy will receive story credit for the sequel. “This is new for him, to get credit,” said Marcel, adding, “but it’s not new for him to be this involved. He’s absolutely 100 per cent committed to everything that he does.” She went on to discuss Hardy’s commitment to doing right by the Eddie Brock and Venom characters, stating, “He’s married to Venom. He loves this character. He’s very involved in what he thinks should happen.”
The Venom sequel will pit Eddie/Venom against Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady, a serial killer who becomes the host for the symbiote Carnage. Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis revealed Hardy was “very involved” in writing the film in Aug. 2019, saying the movie is “very much centered around [his and Marcel’s] take.”
“He doesn’t get a pen and write,” said Marcel, explaining Hardy’s process to Empire. “We spent months breaking the story together on FaceTime, riffing on ideas, seeing what worked, seeing what didn’t. Then I took everything we spoke about and holed up somewhere for three months quietly, knocking out a script.”
Harrelson made his debut as Cletus during the first Venom‘s post-credits scene, promising Eddie “there’s gonna be carnage” once he breaks out of prison. Following the release of the first Venom: Let There Be Carnage trailer, Serkis explained how Eddie gets pulled further into Kasady’s twisted world.
“They both had strange upbringings with strange relationships with their parents and their families. And there’s an inherent loneliness that they both recognize in each other,” said Serkis. “Cletus actually reaches out and will only speak to Eddie Brock. That’s at the beginning of the story, we learned that he’s the only one he’ll speak to. And the cops, therefore, want Eddie to go in and investigate and try and discover where some of the bodies, some of the many bodies of Cletus’s victims are.”
Directed by Andy Serkis, Venom: Let There Be Carnage stars Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott, Stephen Graham, Sean Delaney and Larry Olubamiwo. The film arrives in theaters Sept. 24.
