The most recent episode of Batwoman Season 3 revealed the origin of the Black Glove Society, and may have set up a returning villain.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batwoman Season 3, Episode 6, “How Does Your Garden Grow?” which aired Wednesday, Nov. 17 on The CW.
Throughout Batwoman Season 3, the Black Glove Society has been performing secretive experiments and sowing chaos in Gotham City. Their backstory and motivations have remained shrouded in mystery until the latest episode, “How Does Your Garden Grow,” shed some light on how the group was founded and what they want. In doing so, the show reveals that its version of Black Glove has a very different purpose than its comics counterpart.
Batwoman‘s version of the Black Glove Society was introduced in Season 3, Episode 4, “Antifreeze.” In that episode, the group kidnapped several people, including Sophie Moore’s sister, in order to perform experiments on them using Mr. Freeze’s cryogenic technology. Although Batwoman managed to save Sophie’s sister, the other victims were killed, and Black Glove was revealed to have been hired by Jada Jet to find a way to freeze Marquis.
After being absent from the previous episode, Black Glove returns in Episode 6, with the member who met with Jada being attacked by Mary Hamilton (who is under Poison Ivy’s control). Mary uses her newfound powers to bury the man in the ground, with him being discovered by the Bat Team during their investigation into Mary’s strange behavior. Instead of turning him in to the G.C.P.D., the Bat Team decides to hold him captive in the sewers until they can get some answers out of him.
Sophie goes down to the sewers to interrogate the mysterious man, whose name is revealed to be Virgil Getty. Virgil tells her that the Black Glove Society is comprised of a number of incredibly influential people with unstable children, singling out the family of Thomas Elliot as having a significant amount of power within the group. He goes on to reveal that the group has operated in secret for decades, funding and conducting top secret research to try and “fix” their children. This backstory is vastly different to the comic book source material, where Black Glove is essentially a demonic cult dedicated to summoning supernatural forces.
Before she can get any more out of Virgil, Sophie is distracted by the arrival of Batwoman. They have a brief argument, during which Virgil is seemingly killed by an unseen assailant. Although Virgil’s death eliminates the Bat Team’s only physical lead on Black Glove, the information that he provided them with is sure to prove invaluable in their continuing investigation.
The reveal of Black Glove’s true nature explains Jada Jet’s affiliation with them, as her search for a cure to Marquis’ violent tendencies aligns perfectly with the mysterious group’s goals. In addition, the reveal that the Elliots are key figures within Black Glove may set up the return of Hush, an iconic villain who was seemingly set up as a major character towards the end of Season 1, only to be quickly defeated and sent to Arkham Asylum in the first episode of Season 2. Despite some minor setbacks, the Black Glove Society is still alive and well, surely already planning their revenge on Batwoman for her interference in their plans for Gotham City.
To see what the Black Glove Society’s next move is, new episodes of Batwoman air Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
