Loki Showrunner Breaks Down Sylvie’s Comic Book Influences

Loki head writer Michael Waldron breaks down the comic book influences for Sylvie, citing the God of Mischief as her ‘biggest inspiration.’

Loki head writer Michael Waldron broke down the comic book influences for Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie, including the God of Mischief himself.

Speaking to CBR, Waldron cited Loki as being the “biggest inspiration” for Sylvie, explaining, “You know, she is ultimately a Loki variant, but one who is her own person and has been shaped into even more of her own person separate from the Loki we know, played by Tom [Hiddleston], of course, by the fact that she was born a woman and just the life that she’s lived on the run from the TVA. So, we wanted to always make sure there was that inherent Lokiness to her.”

In addition to being a Loki variant, Sylvie gets her name from Sylvie Lushton, a Marvel comic book character created by Mark Brooks and Paul Cornell in 2009. A regular young woman from Broxton who’s gifted magical powers by Loki after the Asgardians take up residence in Oklahoma, Sylvie Lushton would go on to become the Enchantress, fashioning herself after Amora the Enchantress.

“Then, you look at inspiration stuff like Enchantress and everything — Sylvie Lushton, another comics character version of the Enchantress that we drew from,” Waldron noted. “We needed just to figure out you know, ‘Okay, what are the parts of this that we can kind of collapse into this character to make her really interesting.’ That’s the great thing about these jobs, is there’s so many amazing ideas in the comics; you’ve just got to figure out which one rip [to] rip off.”

Waldron’s comments echo those of Loki director Kate Herron, who described the show’s version of Sylvie as being a “completely original character” in a previous interview. As Herron pointed out, Sylvia goes out of her way to distance herself from the God of Mischief from the very start of the series. “That was interesting to me in just the sense of who her character’s paying homage to because she’s called Sylvie. It’s like, ‘OK, so where is this character with their identity?’ Because she doesn’t like being called Loki,” Herron added.

Created by Michael Waldron and directed by Kate Herron, Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes, Eugene Cordero as Casey, Sasha Lane as Hunter C-20 and Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, with Richard E. Grant and Jack Veal. New episodes premiere Wednesdays on Disney+.
