Amazing Spider-Man’s New Team Wanted Him to Die For Vampire Science

In Amazing Spiderman #78, Spider-Man’s new allies Beyond Corporation may not actually have Ben Reilly’s best interests at heart.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #78, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Spider-Man’s new allies, Beyond Corporation, may actually turn out to be Ben Reilly’s most deadly enemies. In Amazing Spider-Man #78 by Kelly Thompson, Sara Pichelli and Nolan Woodard, Spider-Man is under the medical care of his new allies Beyond Corporation.

While that is a good thing for Ben Reilly on the surface, there may be something more sinister going on, and that means trouble for the Marvel’s new Spider-Man. To gain a better understanding, let’s first find out how Ben ended up in their care in the first place.

While in combat with Morbius, Spider-Man got a nasty bite from his vampire foe. His self-healing suit — another nice bit of tech from Beyond — did its best to stop the bleeding; unfortunately, the bite was deep and still went through. When Morbius realized he really wanted more of Spider-Man’s blood, Reilly realized the Living Vampire was most likely trying to cure himself, and needed Spidey-s blood to do it.

Ben executed, knowing full well he was outmatched in his condition, lured Morbius back to his penthouse apartment in the Beyond Building. Once he arrived, he activated Langston’s anti-Morbius protocol. Morbius’s arm was blown clean off by the security system’s high-powered laser beam. Not moments later, Ben collapsed into the arms of his girlfriend, Janine. The Morbius toxin finally got to him, though, and as he collapsed, Janine called for help. Luckily, Beyond was quick to respond.

The aftermath of the Morbius fight is where things started to get really interesting. Now under the care of Beyond Corporation at a special medical facility, Ben was being examined by Doctor Bailey and his nurse. Right as the doctor told the nurse to prepare the anti-toxin, the director asks what would happen if they don’t give Spider-Man the anti-toxin right away. Shocked at such a proposition, Doctor Bailey said not saving Ben would be unethical.

The director emphasized her point again, pitching that, despite any risks, a possible outcome of vampire-spider hybrid powers could be a gold mine for research. Still shocked, Doctor Bailey finally managed to convince the morally reprehensible area they were heading into, and the director finally relented. But it was clear that she was treating Spider-Man — whose life was in danger — like a science experiment, immediately calling into question whether the deal Ben worked out with them was for altruistic reasons. This, of course, has been a questions since the start, but these more overt tones from the director clearly suggest this will all end badly soon enough. That’s “Parker” luck for you!

Back to the issue, and Morbius was still on the loose, so Beyond sent Misty Knight and Colleen Wing to deal with him. As they were incapacitating and restraining him, they discussed their feelings of Beyond’s unrelenting surveillance via drones. Wing and Knight came to the conclusion that despite their negative feelings about being watched 24/7, they would deal with it for the sake of cashing paychecks.

It is clear that Beyond Corporation has a hold on Wing and Knight, not only that but they openly flirted with the idea of letting Spider-Man suffer immense pain and more in the name of greed and power disguised as scientific discovery. They have yet to actually do anything “evil,” but with Ben now healed and the return of Kraven the Hunter, what will Beyond do?

Whatever it is, it’s clear they do not have Ben’s best interests at heart. Going forward, Ben Reilly will need to be very careful, because the people that are caring for him, may actually be his most deadly enemies.
