Eternals: 10 Best Fights, Ranked

[ad_1]

The latest team of superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Eternals are cosmic beings sent to Earth by the Celestial Arishem with the goal of protecting humanity from the deviants. The idea may seem simple, but in reality, it is anything but. It is not humans Eternals are fighting for, but rather, the unborn Celestial growing in the center of Earth. The Emergence of Tiamut requires a certain population quota, and once that quota is reached, Tiamut will be born, destroying the planet.

Marvel’s Eternals is a bold movie that creates a conflict so complex, it doesn’t quite manage to fully fit in its own movie. As a rule, previous MCU releases had a classical dynamic in terms of antagonists and protagonists. The same cannot be said about Eternals. The team finds enemies on two different fronts, fights the deviants, Celestial threats, and betrayal among their own ranks. The fights are naturally as varied as the characters in the movie, although some are also better than others.

10 Ajak’s Fight Against The Deviants Makes Her Character Look Weak

The leader of the Eternals, Ajak (Salma Hayek) barely shows up in the movie. Shortly after Eternal Sersi (Gemma Chan) is the target of a deviant attack in London, she and her teammates make their way to Ajak’s home, only to find her already dead. Sersi becomes the Prime Eternal, chosen by Ajak as her successor. It is much later that viewers learn the attack on Ajak was arranged by Ikaris (Richard Madden). Upon learning Ajak changed her mind about their mission, Ikaris feeds her to the deviants.

Ajak’s healing powers don’t help her in battle. She lands on her feet despite falling from a great height, but she needs a shotgun to defend herself. In the end, she doesn’t manage to do much, as she is attacked by deviant Kro from behind. The fight doesn’t take long, and it makes her character look underpowered compared to her fellow Eternals. Maybe she’ll have better luck if she gets the chance to return in the sequel.

9 Sprite Uses Her Illusions To Take Sersi By Surprise

After the truth about Ikaris’ deception is revealed, the team is divided, leading to a confrontation between Ikaris and the rest of the Eternals. Sprite (Lia McHugh) joins his side due to having feelings for Ikaris. While Ikaris battles the others, Sprite confronts Sersi. She transforms into Ajak to take Sersi by surprise.

Sersi isn’t fooled but she does get distracted, allowing Sprite to stab her from behind. The scene has a lot of emotional impact, explaining Sprite’s motivations better, but it’s not actually very intense from a fighting standpoint. Druig (Barry Keoghan) ends up knocking Sprite out, ending the exchange between the two female Eternals.

8 The Fight Against Kro In London Is Full Of Unexpected Twists

The original deviant attack in London is full of surprises. Sersi, Sprite, and Sersi’s human boyfriend, Dane Whitman (Kit Harington), are ambushed by Kro. Sprite tries to cover their retreat, but she only has limited success. Ikaris shows up and chases off the deviant, but Sersi possibly gets the best moment in the scene. As a London bus almost hits her, she transforms it into a shower of rose petals. It is beautifully done and the imagery also emphasizes Sersi’s kinder, gentler character.

7 The Eternals Fight The Deviants In the Amazon Forest

As the movie progresses, the team slowly begins to gather all its members. The Eternals track down Druig in the Amazon rainforest, but their meeting doesn’t go well. Not only does Druig originally refuse to help them, but they are tracked down and ambushed by deviants. Druig’s mind control doesn’t work on them, but he uses his human slaves as an extension of him. Ikaris takes to the skies as he fights a deviant. Sersi manages to use her matter transmutation abilities and turn it into a tree, even if she could never transform living beings before.

6 Thena Turns On Her Allies Due To Her Mahd Wy’ry

One of the strongest points in Eternals is the fact that the movie handles problematic themes like mental health issues. The MCU has tackled this type of sensitive topic before, including Tony Stark’s heavy PTSD or Wanda Maximoff’s grief and depression. Eternals introduces Thena (Angelina Jolie) who suffers from an Eternal-specific condition called Mahd Wy’ry.

The condition is caused by her memories being imperfectly erased during the last Emergence, and her recalling the traumatic events of their past mission. Due to the Mahd Wy’ry, she turns on her allies on more than one occasion. Gilgamesh (Ma Dong-seok) stops her from hurting herself or others, and he also acts as her anchor and protector.

5 The First Fights Against The Deviants Introduce Viewers To The Eternals

Don Lee as Gilgamesh in Eternals

Eternals begins in 5000 BC, and the movie starts with the Domo’s arrival on Earth, during a deviant attack. The scene is a little reminiscent of the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron, during which the Avengers teamed up against the forces of Hydra. The setting is very different, but the concept is the same, as the combat-oriented Eternals are individually shown taking out threats and using their abilities.

Notable sequences include Thena and Gilgamesh teaming up in a graceful takedown of a deviant, Ikaris charging at a flying deviant on his own, and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) saving humans using her super-speed, then joining Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) in dispatching one of the remaining creatures. It is not the only historical fight the movie includes. A similar scene takes place later, with the five combat-oriented Eternals protecting the city of Babylon from deviant attacks.

4 Gilgamesh’s Fight With Kro Has A Heartbreaking Ending

Kro Eternals

While the overall battle in the Amazon forest is interesting, it is Gilgamesh’s fight with Kro that truly steals the show. He and Thena are ambushed by Kro, and Thena is rendered helpless by her Mahd Wy’ry. Gilgamesh puts up a good fight, but he is eventually overpowered.

While the fight itself is interesting, it is the emotional depth of the scene that actually makes it so great. Thena has to watch helplessly as her partner is brutally killed in front of her very eyes. His final words are for her, telling her to remember – a clear sign of the loyalty and affection he has for her. In the aftermath, Kro absorbs Gilgamesh’s power and becomes fully sentient in a way he wasn’t before.

3 Thena Avenges Gilgamesh By Killing Kro

For the rest of the movie, Thena mourns Gilgamesh but is also determined to avenge him. The chance comes during the Emergence. When Kro pursues the Eternals, he and Thena end up fighting in a massive cave. Thena gains the upper hand, but Kro comes close to incapacitating her by using Gilgamesh’s presence and memories against her. At the last moment, Thena recovers, following Gilgamesh’s last wish – to remember. She kills Kro, thereby avenging her lost partner.

2 Sersi Fights The Emergence Using The Power Of The Uni-Mind

Eternals Tiamut Celestial

The Eternals originally plan to take out Tiamut by boosting Druig’s mind-control power with their own abilities, through the Uni-mind created by Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry). That option fails when Ikaris attacks Druig, putting him out of commission. Sersi is left with no option but to confront the Celestial herself.

Surprisingly, she manages to connect with Tiamut through the Uni-Mind. Channeling the power of her fellow Eternals and that of Tiamut, she manages to turn the Eternal into marble. It’s a remarkable achievement, as Sersi fights a phenomenon of cosmic proportions, and wins.

1 Makkari Teams Up With Thena and Phastos Against Ikaris

The best fight in Eternals is easily Ikaris’s confrontation with Makkari, Thena, and Phastos. Makkari shines as she lashes out at Ikaris for attacking Druig. Her fierceness manifests into a flurry of high-speed punches which Ikaris tries but fails to avoid. Thena’s one-on-one confrontation with Ikaris does end in failure, but she holds her own, her grace and weapons mastery on full display.

Her loss doesn’t discourage her and she fights side by side with the others, but it is Phastos who really seals the deal. In what is perhaps the most satisfying scene of the movie, he uses his technology to trap Ikaris, force him to kneel, and restrict the use of his powers. The strongest Eternal does manage to free himself eventually, but by then, Phastos and the others have bought Sersi enough time to handle the Emergence.
