An insider claims there’s tension behind the scenes at Disney over whether or not to include adult content on its streaming service.
Disney+ is reportedly debating whether they should stick to hosting only family-friendly content on the platform.
According to Puck, Disney+ is in a heated debate over adding more adult content to the service rather than keeping all media PG. A source told the publication that Bob Chapek, CEO of the Walt Disney Company, and former CEO and current executive of the board Bob Iger have different ideas for the streaming service. Chapek reportedly wants to grow the type of content on the site, following Netflix’s model of constantly generating new media, while Iger wants the platform to keep its more niche approach.
The source also went on to explain that this heated discussion has to do with subscribers, as allowing more adult content on the platform is a sure way to increase subscriptions. When Disney+ initially launched, it combined content from the likes of Marvel Studios, Star Wars and National Geographic. However, there was a lack of adult content on the site, putting the company at a massive disadvantage compared to competitors Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO Max.
In February, Disney+ added Star as a hub on the platform in certain international markets featuring television and movie content for older audiences from ABC, 20th Century Fox and FX. This addition to the service came at no additional cost, and parental controls mean that the service can keep adult and family content separate.
The recent Disney+ Day — celebrating two years of the streaming platform — saw both a number of exciting announcements for upcoming projects and the addition of various new content. Some of the upcoming shows teased included Marvel’s new series Agatha: House of Harkness and Echo, and the National Geographic docuseries Limitless with Chris Hemsworth.
