Iron Man Summons His Forgotten MCU Army Against Ultron

[ad_1]

As the Avengers battle against an Infinity Stone-upgraded Red Skull continues, Iron Man decides to roll out on his weapons straight from the MCU.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Avengers: Tech-On Avengers #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

As one of the leading scientists in the Marvel Universe specializing in advanced robotics and computer science, it’s a cinch that Tony Stark has at least dabbled with artificial intelligence. Virtually all of Tony’s recent Iron Man armors have featured some sort of on-board A.I. to help him run the numerous systems and processes while defending the Marvel Universe. As the Avengers face a cosmically upgraded Red Skull who has created his own monstrous vision of Ultron to terrorize Tokyo in the comic book miniseries Avengers: Tech-On Avengers, Tony decides to employ one of his more divisive weapons from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to help save the day: The Iron Legion.

The Marvel Universe has recently seen an influx of sentient machines and artificial intelligence, with this playing a major role in the crossover event Iron Man 2020. Since then, Tony has largely gone back to the basics with his superhero approach, retaining the digital program to help him run the Iron Man armor but avoiding pushing the limits of A.I. and other such pursuits in his professional civilian career in favor of using his business interests to improve medical technology. However, as an Infinity Stone shard-empowered Ultron unleashes an army of robotic drones in the skies over Japan, Tony activates his own set of robotic drones to drive them back in Avengers: Tech-On Avengers #4 by Jim Zub, Jeffrey “Chamba” Cruz, and VC’s Travis Lanham.

Iron Man Shinobis

The Red Skull has used portions of the Infinity Mirror Shards to create his own twist on many of the Marvel Universe’s most infamous supervillains, including Ultron. Possessing this fraction of the Infinity Stones’ power, Ultron is able to constantly replicate drones that are poised to overwhelm Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Increasingly outnumbered, Iron Man, reveals he has repurposed much of his previous armor into a makeshift army he has since dubbed the Iron Shinobi Squadron. Conveniently located in a nearby Japanese factory, Tony activates his personal squadron to help combat the Ultron drones before Black Panther arrives on the scene to deal the decisive blow against the evil robots.

The Iron Shinobi Squadron mirrors the MCU Iron Man using his own drone army of armor in both Iron Man 3 and, fittingly, Avengers: Age of Ultron. By the events of Age of Ultron, Tony referred to this private drone squadron as the Iron Legion, with the robots often programmed to carry out crowd control and mitigate collateral damage while the Avengers were focused on the battle at hand. As Ultron gained sentience from the Mind Stone, he claimed his first body from the Iron Legion before summoning the rest of the robots to attack the Avengers in their Manhattan headquarters before he escaped and fashioned a vibranium body for himself.

Iron Man Iron Legion Avengers Tech-On

Tech-On Avengers‘ Iron Shinobi Squadron, fortunately, remains uncompromised by Ultron, even with the robotic villain boasting a cosmic upgrade thanks to the Red Skull. As much as Ultron was poised to achieve his dream of a Marvel Universe dominated by robots in his sinister image, the Avengers are able to meet their old nemesis at his own level with some robotic tricks of their own to turn the tide of battle. And with his cosmic version of Ultron joining a growing line of defeated supervillains, the Red Skull is sure to become even more desperate and dangerous.
