Lobo, DC’s most notorious cosmic bounty hunter, once proved capable of overcoming and defeating a Green Lantern’s greatest strength.
The Green Lanterns rank among the most powerful heroes in the entire DC universe. Comprised of heroes of every race and species, the Green Lanterns act as the universe’s premiere intergalactic defense force. Led by the Guardians of Oa and wielding the mighty Green Power Rings, there are few things that the powerful corps can’t handle. Unfortunately, one of those few things happen to be Lobo, one of the most ruthless and dangerous bounty hunters in existence. In a battle the Justice League will never forget, Lobo once proved he was capable of rendering a Green Lantern’s greatest weapon completely useless.
In Justice League International #18 (by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMattteis, Kevin Maguire, and Al Gordon), Scott Free, a.k.a. Mister Miracle, has been kidnapped by Lord Manga Khan and is headed to Apokolips. Luckily for Scott, the Justice League International is in hot pursuit of Kahn in an effort to rescue him. Big Barda, Martian Manhunter, Rocket Red, and the Green Lantern G’Nort manage to find Khan’s spaceship, but are unaware that the villain has contracted Lobo to dispose of them.
Big Barda and Gnort are terrified at Lobo’s arrival, while Rocket Red and Martian Manhunter have no idea who he is. Rather than letting him tear his way through the hull of the spacecraft, Big Barda lets Lobo on the ship, ordering the others to stall him. Martian Manhunter viciously attacks the bounty hunter until Barda warns him not to hit him too hard, explaining that every drop of blood that falls from Lobo will grow into a clone of the formidable bounty hunter. After Manhunter goads Lobo, the bounty hunter hits the Martian so hard that he becomes lodged in a nearby wall, entangled in circuitry.
Gnort steps up to Lobo next, encasing him in a green energy construct with his Power Ring. The bounty hunter scoffs at the effort of the Green Lantern and does something that should be impossible: using his even greater willpower, he literally walks through the energy construct, destroying it in the process. Just as it seems Lobo will be victorious against the combined might of all the heroes, Barda uses her Mega-Rod to teleport Lobo far away to an unknown part of space. It’s a quick, but effective victory for the heroes, but their near-defeat by Lobo only proved how terrifyingly strong he is.
The various Power Rings that represent each different Lantern Corps are fueled by different emotional affinities. The Green Lantern’s ring’s are powered by the willpower of its respective wearer; those lacking the sufficient amount will be unable to wield a green Power Ring. While this might not sound too taxing a feat to accomplish, there’s a good reason why only a select few within the entire universe are selected to join the Green Lantern Corps. The strength of the Power Ring’s constructs are based on their creator’s willpower; for Lobo to have destroyed Gnort’s construct so easily implies that Lobo quite possibly possesses the power to defeat the entire Green Lantern Corps.
The argument could be made that Gnort could simply be less powerful a Green Lantern than the likes of Kyle Rayner or Hal Jordan, but even that doesn’t change the fact that Lobo was able to beat him by sheer willpower alone. The question of what would happen if Lobo himself became a Green Lantern was answered in Injustice 2 #62 (by Tom Taylor, Daniel Sampere, and Wes Abbott). In short, The Main Man was quite effective as a Green Lantern, even though he was one of the more obscene members the Corps has ever had. Regardless, Lobo proved to be one of the most dangerous opponents both the Justice League and the Green Lantern have ever faced.
