The Survey Corps is the branch of the military responsible for expeditions beyond the wall in Attack on Titan. Unlike other military positions, where a soldier can go their entire life without seeing a Titan, the Survey Corps members often engage and combat Titans in hopes of conquering their enemy.
A successful Scout possesses supreme combat skills alongside a mastery of ODM gear. However, it’s equally important to have a sharp mind and keen intellect that can help formulate strategies with the best possible outcome. Those who lack the brain to match the brawn never seem to last long in the terrifying world of Attack on Titan.
10 Connie’s Understated Intelligence Was One Reason He Managed To Survive For So Long
Connie’s intelligence and initiative stems from an extensive understanding of his own limitations. The Scout never bites off more than he can chew, which is a trait that has helped him survive countless encounters with Titans. Unlike Mikasa and Levi, Connie is unable to do much on his own and thus puts all of his efforts into working effectively within his team.
He also possesses a high level of emotional intelligence and remains fairly calm in the face of battle. Connie lacks the talent to be a leader or designated strategist, and he never attempts to be. His willingness to accept his own limitations should not be understated.
9 Sasha Has Acquired An Unparalleled Understanding Of Nature
Although more likely to think with her stomach than her head, Sasha is nevertheless a smart and competent soldier. Born in a remote town, Sasha learned to hunt from a young age and developed an impressive understanding of the local animals and their behavior.
Her hunting experience helped her recognize that the Female Titan’s scream was a call for help as it was similar to the distress calls of animals. Despite participating in numerous expeditions outside the walls, Saha has managed to survive. That’s a testament to both her physical capabilities and wit.
8 Jean Consistently Proved Himself To Be A Capable Leader
Originally portrayed as a minor antagonist with a temper to rival Eren’s, Jean really grew into his leadership role and displayed a talent for tactics and strategy as the story progressed. His level-headedness even under stress is highly impressive, and it’s a major reason why Jean survives for so long.
His leadership was remarkable during the Trost arc, despite only just graduating and joining the scouts. What makes the scout so endearing is that despite his fear and vulnerability, he pushes through and acts selflessly. This is a contrasting style to the superhuman Levi and fearless Eren.
7 Mikasa’s Battle Intelligence Is Remarkable
Similar to Levi, Mikasa’s intelligence is obvious in battle. She effortlessly finished at the top of her graduating class and went on to be recognized as a devastating weapon equivalent to 100 ordinary soldiers. True to her Ackerman name, Mikasa maintains her stoic personality even when facing Titans and can effortlessly adjust to the everchanging direction of the fight.
In fact, Mikasa seems far more comfortable against a Titan than she does while navigating the political minefield back in Paradis. Her intellect was made strictly for battle.
6 Eren Could Access The Memories & Knowledge Of Others
Originally, Eren was pretty ordinary. He wasn’t quite as smart as Armin, and he started out weaker than Mikasa. In fact, Eren only stood out for his ferocious temperament and inhuman perseverance. But after inheriting the Attack Titan, he could access the memories of past and future inheritors of the Attack Titan. With this ability, Eren benefited from an unparalleled understanding of world history.
This knowledge changed him completely, leading him to disregard the lives of others in order to carry out his plan to exterminate the rest of the world. He may not have possessed the intellectual capabilities of Armin or Hange, but his encyclopedic knowledge was unrivaled.
5 Mike Was A Trusted Member Of The Scouts And Humanity’s Second Strongest Soldier
Mike Zacharias was an underutilized character whom fans desperately wanted to see more of. With his limited character development, it is difficult to discern the full extent of Mike’s capabilities. However, second to only Levi in combat ability, it could be assumed that Mike’s battle intelligence was top notch and exceeded Mikasa’s.
Additionally, he was able to smell Titans and formulate plans based on their positions. Erwin trusted him enough to make him a Scout leader, and he was respected by his peers, including Levi and Hange. It was a shame that Mike met his end early on without demonstrating the extent of his abilities.
4 Levi Possesses Unrivalled Battle Instincts
Levi Ackerman is universally recognized as humanity’s strongest soldier, and his performance throughout the anime further solidifies his title. Despite being just one man, he has taken down the Female Titan, The Beast Titan, and the notorious Kenny The Ripper.
His physical attributes and skill with ODM gear are almost inhuman, but it’s his ability to quickly adapt and make adjustments that pushes him beyond everyone else. Levi can formulate a plan in seconds, which makes him a terrifying opponent for humans and Titans alike. This seems to be a trait shared by all Ackerman, although Levi has taken it to an entirely new level.
3 Armin’s Strategic Mind Contributed To His Rise To Scout Commander
Initially, Armin’s intelligence was overshadowed by his lack of confidence. It wasn’t until he was forced to take a central role and save his comrades that his intellect truly thrived. He correctly deduced the identity of the Titan shifters and convinced hundreds of soldiers to spare Eren’s life by appealing to his strategic value.
Armin possesses the best intellectual traits of Erwin and Levi, combining superior planning with quick thinking. Because of his overwhelming strengths, Armin succeeded Hange as Scout Leader.
2 Hange Was The Survey Corp’s Very Own Mad Scientist
Early on in Attack On Titan, Hange was portrayed as a titan-obsessed scout who didn’t fear Eren despite the revelation of his titan-shifting abilities. Hange’s persistence and drive to learn more about their natural enemy yielded a significant amount of information. This evident intelligence resulted in Erwin naming Hange as his successor.
As the leader, Hange reigned in their more obsessive qualities and proved to be capable of filling in for Erwin. The Scouts and humanity continued to progress under the leadership of Hange.
1 Erwin Was The Scouts Smartest And Greatest Commander
Erwin Smith was the former leader of the Scouts and a man of immense intellect. Under his leadership, the Scouts would learn a lot about the Titans, and their missions beyond the walls often ended in success. Erwin arguably held the most difficult job in the world, aware that every decision he made resulted in the death of his men.
His stoic demeanor allowed him to send his soldiers to their death, but not without benefitting the progression of humanity. During his time as Captain, he developed the long-range scouting formation and effortlessly adapted to the introduction of Titan shifters.
