Suicide Squad director James Gunn discusses his love for Bloodsport’s redesign and how he had total control from Warner Bros. while making the film.
James Gunn reveals that developing the suit for Idris Elba’s Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad took a more lengthy amount of time than that of any other character in the film.
Preview pages for Suicide Squad #5 (2021) have been released, showing off Bloodsport in his new cinematic attire. Gunn posted on Twitter how proud he was of the character’s redesign, commenting that “Bloodsport is beautiful.”
Bloodsport, or Robert DuBois, first debuted in comics in Superman Vol. 2 #4, and the outfit he has worn from that point on has consisted of a red mask, camouflage pants, and a black shirt. For the upcoming film, his character was given a makeover that Gunn had to extensively work out with the costume design and props department, claiming it was a lengthy and tedious process.
Responding to a fan who asked how long it took to formulate the new suit, Gunn said, “Twice as long as it did for any other costume in this or in other films. Because of all the ways the plot interacts with the weapons all over the suit, it was a ridiculously complex process for me, Judianna our costume designer & Drew our props guy.”
Bloodsport’s new look has now been brought from the screen to the page with the fifth issue of the current Suicide Squad run. According to the preview, the new uniform was given to DuBois by Amanda Waller so he could travel and explore the Multiverse for her as a “one-man Suicide Squad”.
This is not the first time a member of Task Force X has taken inspiration from their live action counterpart as well. Since Suicide Squad came out in 2016, Harley Quinn has been sporting blonde hair with colored ends both in comics and other adaptations, such as the Harley Quinn series on HBO Max.
The Suicide Squad has also been influencing the current comics run with the inclusion of Peacemaker as the leader of the team. Peacemaker will be portrayed by John Cena in the film as well as a solo series on HBO Max, both created by Gunn.
The director also claims to have not had any kind of pushback from Warner Bros. on any of his ideas while crafting the film. When a fan asked if the studio tried to tell Gunn what to do, he responded, “When you see the movie, you’ll discover that the answer is no, never.”
Gunn even goes as far as to hint that he had even more freedom working on The Suicide Squad than he did Guardians of the Galaxy, since he was not hindered by the film’s R rating. “There really are no rules. Most of it is I let myself go more wild.”
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and John Cena as Peacemaker, with Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 6.
